got my ARP studs and MLS gaskets on my 5.0 turbo engine and went out to flog it only to find the 3rd gear clutches are wiped. i need to go pull a trans at the junkyard tomorrow. i am assuming the mark vii uses the same trans?

any info on what year trans i can use, and what model fords came with a compatible AOD? just trying to keep my options open because there aren't any 5.0 mustangs there but there are a bunch of lincoln mark vii's, crown vics, t-birds, cougars, etc.. it's a non-electronic AOD installed behind the 5.0 turbo in my volvo. thanks.

The MKVII does use the same AOD, I'd be thinking about a rebuild though. If you can swing it, buy a Baumanator and find yourself an 4R70W from a 97+ 4.2L 6 cylinder Ford E series or F series. That'll stand up to your power levels much better than a crappy old AOD unless you build the AOD up with about $1500 in parts.

You want a Ford or Mercury trans. Lincoln ones are longer. If you get one that has a different shift lever, its not hard to swap. Honestly you'll be better off rebuilding what you have rather than sticking an unknown junkyard trans in there. If its rebuilt, you have the option to have it built to actually hold up to that engine. A used stocker will most likely burn up in fairly short order.

There is no HO or non-HO trans, but the governer is different. Its in the tailshaft, fairly easy to swap. Vic trans will work, but WOT is like 4200 rpm shifts, and the lever on the side will not be the same. Its easy to change tho.

I still say a proper trans job is a better idea. Granny's tranny wasn't designed to hold up to a turbo motor.

the RF# on my AOD case is E9DP-7006-AA, i have no idea what car it was originally out of and the build tag is missing. it has the lentech street terminator kit in there so i will be transferring that to the one i got at the junkyard.

being the lazy ass that i am, i ended up pulling an AOD from a 1991 E-150 conversion van w/ 65k miles, it had a locked up motor and the trans had the same casting number as mine. i was hoping the van/truck trans might have stronger internals but i have no idea.

either way i hope i did the right thing. if the tailshaft housing is not the same length, can i swap it with the one on my bad trans?

you cant just swap out the tailshaft housing because the output shaft is also longer, and if i remember correctly the AODs in the trucks and vans have a couple extra clutches in the drums but im not completly sure on this . Its been awhile since ive had an AOD apart

i have the crown vic tv cable setup because this is in a volvo, can't i just swap the governor from my old trans?

what is the trans casting # on the case of the crown vic trans? i ended up getting the trans from the van because it had the same casting numbers as the one i have and appeared to be the closest match. this is not a high rpm motor either.
