Anyone think the Dynomax ultra flows are too loud?

I am getting ready to buy a new catback for my 94 gt. It's exhaust conist of FRPP shortys, UPR off road x, and as of right now the stock catback. It also has a small cam. I had a Flowmaster American thunder with a BBK off road X. It sounded good, but it was a bit too loud. I am looking at the dynomax super turbo, and ultra flow systems, I know the ultra flow is a straight through design, and I am worried about it being too loud with the headers and the x pipe. Right now the stock catback is just far too quiet. I can literally hear my motor over the exhaust. I don't want it to be as quiet as it is now, but I don't want it to get tiring to drive because of the exhaust. Please give me you opinions.

Thanks,
Shawn

I do, based on the set I had on my car several years ago, but every time I say so, everybody tells me I'm a crazy, theyr'e quiet, and I must be an old man who must yell at kids to get off my lawn.

I'm fed up with my super turbos too. Next up: Borla XS. Every test I can find shows they're the quietest performance muffler at idle and in the usual drone range.

when my buddy switched to ultraflows from flowmasters it was actually quiter. It sounded awesome at wot though outside the car. I am thinking of doing a dynomax catback on my car here shortly, the flowmater i have now rattles like a son of a bitch and has seen better days

Yeah, I mean I wouldn't have a problem going back to a flowmaster system, but thought I would try something a little different this time around. I just don't want to order the super turbo catback, and it not sound any better than what I have now. Cause it doesn't sound good now at all in my opinion.

Thanks,
Shawn

I'm currently in the same boat. I have stock manifolds and cats (Just bought a set of FRP headers off the classifieds last sat.) and I'm thinking of going with the Dynomax. Co-worker had a set of Super Turbos or the Ultra Flow on his Fox body a few years back that sounded great! He still had the factory cats and no headers though.
My current cat back is the stock 2 1/4" pipes with Flowmaster Delta Series 50's. Sounds great, but I need to open up the pipes with 2 1/2" since I'm planning on installing my TW heads and Stage 1 cam. Easier to get a new cat back than just swap the pipes.
I did do a you tube search on "5.0 Dynomax" and you can get a lot of video clips with the cars at idle, revving the motor up, drive bys, etc.
I'm waiting to hear the new DynoMax VT that is advertised as "DRONE FREE" since I drive a convertible. I wonder how it compairs to the Cobra mufflers FRP advertised as having internal valving that varied with RPM's and were something like $800 each?
I like the exhaust to be heard when I'm into the go pedal, but I guess at 47 years of age, I don't really want to hear it while cruising down the interstate at 60-70 mph.

Borla XS's is probably what would suit you best. Not only do you want it to sound good, but, you want it to perform well too. Flowmasters are pretty restrictive IMO. I swapped them out for Pype's violators and you could see a big SOTP difference.

Much quieter than DynoMax RaceBullets (which I had on my notch), they're probably my favorite muffler. Flowmasters sound good (if H pipes are your thing) until 2k. Ultraflows - Modest growl when you're cruising, when you go to 4k or above they scream like a banshee. MFE is a crazy old man :p. Not to get off topic, but I was torn between the XS and the Ultraflows I have now, my next muffler will also be the ProXS. By the way, you made a good choice going with the X ;).

I do hear a lot of good things about the borlas, but i don't think they come as a catback system do they? I'm looking for a system that comes with the stockish tips like the dynomax or the flowmaster. Right now I am leaning toward the super turbo, but have not def made up my mind yet.

Thanks,
Shawn

borla and magna flow seem to be slightly less loud in my experience...but you could do like I did and keep it really loud but pull the carpet up and spray some sound deadner all in the interior...added 7 pounds to the car but I can talk like normal when I drive and still trip car alarms :)

Nothing with taipipes is loud.. Dumped Flow's FTW for being loud lol.. a buddy of mine had Flowmaster single chamber race mufflers, it was excessive lol. My ears would ring after we got out of the car (it also had a 306 with AFR heads and a decent size comp cam)..

I went to dumps on my Flowmaster 50's because they were too quiet with tails. I'll probably end up with maggies and tailpipes, or maybe Ultra flows.. just gotta get a builder that can squeeze it through my panhard bar.

Ultra flo's are much quieter than flowmasters. I had than on my car years ago and removed them because they sounded bad.

+1 on dumps being the loudest. ..had to remove mine cause I couldn't hear myself think

If you're talking about the stainless ultra flows they are MUCH quieter than flowmasters. In fact they are just slightly louder than stock.

Here's a clip of mine when I had ultraflows paired with an offroad X and longtubes on my current engine.

dumps sound like ####, period - plus, who wants to be breathing in "dumped" exhaust when coming to a stop due to traffic, traffic control devices and/or stop signs, etc....

there's tons of muffler threads on this site and many others - the opinions are going to be so varied that you just have to bite the bullet, buy what you are interested in and if it does not sound good to your liking, pull them off, sell, and buy another set of something different....

He's at least asking about one specific type of muffler here, so its not one of those "which sounds best" threads ;)

here is a sound of my dynomax Ultraflows; they are Super loud

- currently BBK 1 3/4" long tubes to customer 3" xpipe and dumped 3" ultraflows

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kwHU6WyhaU

swapping exhausts here soon: going with a prochamber to SLP Lm2's....non dumped....this should still be loud but quieter and hopefully a little more torque...

Ultras are not super loud if you've got tailpipes. I've had 40 series flows, my current ultras and magnaflows too. Ultras are noticibly louder than stock at idle but not too loud. No drone at highway speeds like flows and when you step on it they REALLY wake up. Old combo was FMS shorties with offroad H and the ultras. Current combo is Longtubes with catted H and the same ultras. Sounds amazing still and I always get asked what exhaust I have because EVERYONE has flowmasters around here with MAYBE an occasional Magnaflow running around. I'm the only person I know around where I live and where I used to live in DE with a Mustang with any sort of Dynomax exhaust.

just get it loud as you can in a sound you like (may have to try a few as stated above) then get some good spray on sound deadner and then you will loud at WOT outside the car but inside you will still be able to hear your radio, talk to your passengers, etc....just my .02 and this is what I did and I love my exhaust but to each his own
