I am contemplating doing this for some front end weight reduction. It would be cheaper than an aftermarket hood, and I haven't seen any aftermarket ones that have the stock shape (which I like). Plus, no need to worry about whether the aftermarket hood will fit, or the cost of painting.
So if anyone has done this, how much of the bracing can be safely removed? I saw an old post where someone had pics of their hood, but those pics are gone. What's the best way to do it? I have a sawzall, but I'm afraid it could do some unintended damage. How about a mini air grinder with a cutoff wheel? Seems like the front and the two sides have the heaviest bracing. I assume the edges that form the small cowl help stiffen the hood along that area. My main concern is removing too much bracing and having the hood possibly cave in at high speed.
For anyone who has done this, can a modded stock hood approach the weight of a glass hood? And pics would be much appreciated.
