Aftermarket shifters--worth it?

I know just about everyone has one, but I've never driven a car that had one--what are they like? My main problem with the stock unit is that it's way too far forward--would an aftermarket shifter help this? Also, what's the installation like (time? easy?)? Thanks for the help!!

I installed a Tri-Ax on my car a few weeks ago. $180 got me, no improvement in shifter location, some drivetrain noises and a slight improvement in the feel of the shifter.

My conclusion: should have spent that money on something else.

by the way, it took me 1 hour to install.

go with a pro 5.0, I always wondered about shifters myself when I had an auto trans, but I got the pro 5.0 on sale, and man that was the best mod I made. Shifts are so much more precise, 3rd is easier to find. I've heard that is you get the pro 5.0 shifter and a triax handle, you can position it so that it comes further back.

I feel that aftermarket shifters feel way too harsh and transmit more noise into the cabin and besides, I have no complaints with my stock shifter, so Im not going to change it. The bottom line is that you should try out an aftermarket shifter on another's guys car before you potentionally throw your money away.

Ok the Pro 5.0 will not change the location of the shifter, it will actually put it further foward, but man does it make your car shift much better! I thought the same thing before, that getting an aftermarket shifter wont do jack. Well after installed it, I took my words back as it makes finding ANY gear a breeze and makes the transmission much more solid feeling and alot more fun to drive! Yes a little bit of noise will reverberate into the cabin but is it really that bothersome? IMO I think its managable, but dont all performance parts come at a price? I certainly wouldnt mind a Vortech or KB singing into my dash. BTW, heres an article you can use to install a Pro 5.0, if you get one, and it shows you how to re-use the stock rubber boot to help dampen any shifter noise.

Pro 5.0 with an MGW shifter handle is the way to go. Tri-Ax is garbage (way too notchy) and the stocker is asking for tranny death if you race your car at all. And not to sound like a spoil-sport, but a Mustang is the wrong car to drive if you want a shifter close to you, hehe.

I love my Pro-5.0 Great shifter....get rid of the stock sloppy shifter...

May 02, 2002 Bought with 19,191
May 04, 2002 Installed short-throw shifter
 That's straight out of my "log" book for my car. The stocker didn't last two days and this was my first stick car. I couldn't stand that long throw and the look of it. It seemed like I would hit the radio in third.

I went with a B&M ripper shifter and I love it. My friend has one on his T5'd 5.0 and he loves it too. My friend just put the Tri-ax on his and we're going to drive each others car just to get a feel for what else is out there.

Stock shifter sucks!

Whether you go with the Pro 5.0, Tri-Ax or stick with the stock shifter you should get the MGW shift handle. You can adjust the location of the handle and it is much stronger than the handles provide with the aftermarket shifters. I just recently bought the MGW shift handle and I really like the feel of the shifter. BTW, I agree with everyone else, an aftermarket shifter is worth the investment. The only downside is the interior noise, since there is far less insulation in the aftermarket setups.

If you cant reach the shifter then slide your seat forward. I'm fairly tall 6'4" so it makes reaching the shifter easier but I also don't have my seat slid way back like some. I like having my seat forwards, that way I can easily reach the clutch and shifter. Its much better than when the seats back, slide your seat forwards and you'll see. I have my tri-ax set on the shortest setting and I can reach it fine. When Im out on the highway then Ill slide my seat back, but once I get into town it goes back forward. I couldnt imagine not having a Tri-ax on my car, it was the very first mod I did to this car. :D

not only do aftermarket shifters make the shifts much more precise and crisp, they will protect your syncro's. they have stops which prevent them from damaging on hard shifts which the stock shifter lacks...

get a tri-ax or a pro 5.0 and dont look back. I wouldnt own a car without one.

shifts feel 100% better, plus you can bang the gears as hard as you want and your trany will not feel a thing ;)

Best mod for the dollar if you ask me. If you want to change position I would definetly get the MGW shift handle. I have on on my Tri-ax and I love it. It has many different positions so you can adjust it to your likings. Plus, the quality is supurb.

Some of you are missing the point, the biggest reason for getting a shifter is so your trans will live longer. I didn't buy a cobra to drive it like a grandpa. If you are banging gears you had better get one because without the stops in aftermarkets shifters, your trans will hate you.

My tri-ax puts the shifter right in the perfect position for me...I never have to lift my elbow up off the center console when shifting during normal everyday driving...And of course it makes banging the gears at the track that much more fun since you can whale away on them...

I've owned a 93 Cobra, a 98 Cobra and now an 01 Cobra. Getting rid of that stock SLOPPY shifter is the BEST thing you can do. More precise shifts and shorter throws. I have a Tri-Ax in my 01. I don't hear any noise from it? As for improvements? It's 100% better! Took me 20 mins to install. I actually bought this shifter before I bought my car! If you're looking for something to relocate the shifter back a little? Check out this link. It might help.

I hate to be a killjoy, but seeing that you've got a brand new car, a new shifter might not suit you. I'm not sure what people mean when they say the "feel" is better. It is much more mechanical than the stock shifter. I can see how some call the feeling of the stock shifter rubbery, but it has much more of a "quality" to it. More noise will be transmitted in to the cabin, and I guess I'm not sure what I expected from the shifter (maybe a S200 or Miata feel) but it (Steeda Tri-AX) didn't exceed any expectation I had. I retured it and got some lower control arms instead. Everyone is different but the noise and vibration annoyed me. My philosphy is if it doesn't improve the car, than what's the point. I'm not really into trade-offs when it comes to improving my car.

dude, everything has trade offs. Those lower control arms probably transmit a bit more road noise into the car right? But they hook up better. Thats the compromise.

the aftermarket shifter is much more sturdy, prevents you from damaging the shift forks, has a much more direct feel, shortens the throws, and makes it easier to shift from 2nd to 3rd quickly without missing gears. The trade off is a bit of noise. id say its worth it.

it ain't a lexus, its gonna make some noise aftermarket shifter or not. Better yet, add an exhaust to the car and you won't notice the shifter noise.
