Advice on weight reduction

Hey guys I am trying to think of things to take out the car(98gt) to reduce weight, or help with weight transfer. Here in the past month I put on upr chromoly k member/arms with bumpsteer. I want to delete the rear seat for sure, but want to make it myself. What kind of material should I use that is lightest but wont flex too much? Nobody is going to sit on it.

Also I took out my a/c system today but looks like I have to keep the compressor(heaviest part of the system) bolted up until I find someone that makes an 8 rib delete kit for cheap. I think riechard makes one but too pricey. This is a street car so nothing to serious. Any ideas? Plan to move the battery in the trunk in the near future.

Best thing aside from the K member which you've already done but probably more involved than you're looking for would be switching to an aluminum block. Swap out steel supercharger discharge tubing for aluminum. There is a metal plate under the dash right above your knees that you can take out. There is a heavy vibration damper bolted to the diff that can be removed. Take the padding out from underneath the carpeting (not that much weight really, but it's something). If you haven't done so already, take all the EGR components out of the car. Minimal weight reduction but totally free would be drilling holes in several brackets... the power steering reservoir mounting bracket for example.

I have all aluminum piping. Yeah I wish I built a teksid a little late now though. The vibration dampner I did not think about that, I will remove that today. I will check the metal plate you are talking about under the dash. The sound deadner stuff I will leave in I don't really want to pull the carpet up. The egr stuff I still have cause I got to pass emmisions soon but as soon as I do it will come off. Thanks for the helpful reply!

Another idea that I just thought of but haven't personally done nor am I sure I'd really recommend for safety reasons is removal of the steel bumper under the front bumper cover. I've seen some cars use tubular versions of this to make a lot more room for an intercooler. You'd definitely lose some weight doing that. Your call on the safety aspect of this. I have no idea what the reprocussions would be should you get in a front end collision. Also, I have the AJE tubular K member and control arms with coil-over front suspension. Does your kit include coil-overs? If not, switching to that will remove weight as well.

Yeah I have coilovers also. My front bumper support was removed long time ago lol since I can't fab or weld myself I removed it to make the intercooler install much easier. Wonder about the back bumper? This doesn't get driven everyday so idc lol

Another thought is your exhaust. I don't know what you currently have. Obviously, no cats will be lighter than with cats. Also, a catback like Flowmaster does weigh significantly more than something like a Borla S-Type. I just swapped the S-Types in last week and I was pretty surprised at how much lighter everything is.

There has to be a way to run a shorter belt and eliminate the compressor. Get that battery to the trunk. Don't know how far you want to take it, but the door supports can be removed. Racing seats should be considered if you don't already have them.

No cats on exhaust, flow master cat back. I don't see how I can run a shorter belt due to the position of the tensioner. Anyone know if I can bolt on an 8 rib pulley onto the ford racing delete? Also seats are another thing I'm def. Going to check into. I had to lift the passenger side one time it was pretty heavy lol

+1 on seats.

My power leather front seat was about 55 lbs. The passenger seat was 40 lbs. I replaced the driver's seat with a Jazz racing seat with cover and made Aluminum brackets. Total weight = 15 lbs. I put a small thin cushion in the cover, and the seat is perfectly comfortable, I can drive for hours without any problems. I leave the passenger seat out, because I remove it anyway to fit my slicks when I go to the strip.

-Manual steering
-Delete ABS
-Seats
-AC
-Diff dampner
-Plate under trans like was said
-Carpet is easy to pull, you can have the sound deadner out in an hour
-Delete airbags
-Rear seat/seatbelts
-Go wingless
-Light rims
-Switch to manual windows
-Pull factory speaker amps and run off a good aftermarket headunit or just delete the radio totally like the R

There is more that I'm forgetting.

The lightest rear seat delete will always be nothing. Is this a weekend track car or do you need it to be streetable as well? You can do some general weight reductions to your dd but then go drastic for a strip night. Like take out the passenger seat, carpet, center console, front bumper support, etc.

It is not a DD but I drive it on the street whenever I want usually to meets and stuff. I just want to delete a lot of the "hidden stuff" and still look factory. I will go with some kind of lighter seats whenever I get the money for sure, but I won't take any out. Looks like im trying to hard lol, plus people ride with me. Sound deadener doesn't seem worth it too me. It already vibrates and you can hear every noise enough lol. I for sure want to keep my power windows. Airbag deletes I will have to check into. I know there not cheap, but I would like to see the actual weight from them.

Car already is wingless. Has jeg stars, 15x8 all the way around which isn't too bad, eventually I will upgrade to 15x4's in the front or possibly buy some racestars. Car doesn't have abs. Radio I want to keep how it is.

What plate under the trans?

Ok so I removed the little bar under the dash where my knees are(maybe 2-3 pds if that) but it helped me clear space because I re wired my a/f, boost, oil pressure, and volt gauge. Took out the dogbone under the rear. I will check for the plate under the trans here soon. What about the rear bumper support? Easy to get too? I don't want to take my rear bumper off and it not line back up or something.

I can't tell in your avatar pic, but a fiberglass hood saves a lot of weight as long as you get the unfinished underside.

The seats are a great idea. I removed my fox body seats and installed a set made by Cobra. They are the fixed style, are comfy, and weigh in at 16lbs each.

Donnie, if you're serious about taking the AC out, I'd consider the Reichard piece again. I know it's a lot of money, but it's probably just a drop in the bucket compared to what you've already got into the car, and it's a quality item. It doubles as a belt tensioner too which is a plus. I think you'll have issues running a belt without a pulley in that location.

If you want to delete the AC compressor without a kit you would need to change your timing cover to a 2001+ with a single bolt tensioner. That is the only way that it can be done. I dont see why you couldnt run an 8rib pulley with the FRPP AC delete kit. The pulley will just stick out further toward the front of the car not sit deeper and interfer with the timing cover.

Everyone already listed all of the easy weight reduction stuff. I will add that if you have MACH 460 just get rid of all of the amps and acoustic box in the rear deck. That will save you a good amount of weight.

Dorman makes a A/C delete for the 5.4 with 8 rib pulley which bolts up to a 4.6 timing cover I was running one on my car. I don't know the part number but it should be that hard to look up I believe it was around 30-40 bucks.

Awesome stuff guys I went to the track today and although I couldn't get past tech(no driveshaft safety loop) I made sure to weigh my car. Well a year or two ago it was about 3450 when I was about 240-50 pds. I now weigh 270-280, and the car weighed in at 3080 with me in it! I was shocked, I still have a lot more stuff I can take out and it still look and feel like an everyday mustang. I did not know I could get it this light.

Did you have slicks on or something? A STRICT track will keep you from running if you dont have a saftey loop if you are running slicks. Radials you are fine and dont need one. But if they kept you from running and you had radials on thats lame.
