Ok, i know i need a 94-95 bell with 10.5 clutch and 157 tooth flywheel and this tranny will then fit. My question is about the speedometer. I know there both different sensors. So can i just swap a 94-98 tail-housing assembly into the 99-04 and everything will work fine? Also can i use my 94-95 aode harness for the 99-04 v6 t5? thanks

The harness will need to be modified to work. Find a wiring diagram on the AODE harness. It has 4 wires total. 2 wires work the reverse light (doesn't matter which way they go on) and 2 wires run the neutral starter safety switch, all you do it jump it together, I just can't remember the color codes at the moment, maybe someone can chime in on that.

As far as the speedo issue, you can swap a tailshaft over but you'll also need the little plastic gear that goes inside the tailshaft as well as the little metal clip that holds it on. Also you'll need to drill a small hole in the tailshaft itself for the clip to set down into, but be warned, that shaft is NOT easy to drill! I ended up using small carbide grinding stones and grinded the hole into the shaft using a dremel. Worked better than drill bits!

You can get the speedo "drive" gear from any Mustang supply warehouse as well as the Ford dealer. You can get the little metal clip from Ford too but they usually have to order it so order it in advance to your project.

I don't have any links. You're just going to have to do a little legwork on google to find the answers. I told you how I did it but there may be other ways. Others will probably chime in when they see the thread.

Just get a ford racing, brothers performance, or Dallas mustang speedcal box. Then you don't need the tail housing or to grind the shaft.
Exactly right! This is the better way to go. Then you will have an electronic speedometer sending unit that can be calibrated by the speedcal type box.

Yes, you CAN change the tail HOUSING and install the plastic gear, but making that hole in the tail shaft (AKA Main Shaft) is not so easy to do. After stressing over making that one little hole you will hate yourself for not just buying the calibration box!

Gear-wise, the 99-04 V-6 is an exact match for the 94/95 V-8.
The cross member mount location is off a little, but nobody mentions it, so it must not be off by enough to be a problem. Input shafts match and the over all length is correct for the car.

Alright to get this clear, i have 3.73's which means i have to drill a hole in the main-shaft and install the 7 tooth drive gear with the clip and instal the matching 21 tooth gear to make my speedometer work accurate?
Yes, and use a 92-98 tail housing.

The original metal reluctor wheel can stay on the output shaft, as it is out of the way.

Or, skip all of that and buy a 100.00 converter box and you can re-calibrate it any time you change tires or rear gears in the future.

Bell Housing:
As far as I know there is no aftermarket replica of the 94/95 V-8 bell housing. They were only made those two years, but they can be found.

Now, there is a way to use a 3.8 V6 bell housing which is plentiful...
You have to find a 164t V-8 flywheel and use an 11 inch clutch and the V-6 starter. This starts another whole discussion. I've not done it, but there are others her that have...

I think you are misunderstanding what I meant by "drilling". The hole gets drilled on the tailshaft itself. It's for the drive gear retaining clip to have something to hold on to.

What you should do is go out and buy a core for 50 bucks or so and use all the parts off it to do your swap. You can use any world class T5 from 87-98 as the tailshaft housings are the same. This way you can see how the drive gear is mounted and where the hole needs to be drilled for the clip, and you'll have all the parts you need!

ok, this is the hole I'm talking about here, the one to the left:

This is the retaining clip, the little leg sticking out of it goes into that hole, then the gear slides on and snaps into place:

This is the hole in the correct tailhousing for the VSS:

And here's the gear installed onto the shaft:

Here's one that shows how the clip and the gear are oriented:

Yes, folks tend to get "Tail Housing" and "Tail Shaft" confused...

WOW, it was strange to look at the pictures in the post above and recognize that I took three of those pictures myself!

Mine are the three that are smaller and mostly square.

The picture of the two clips with the blue background is showing a GOOD clip next to a BAD clip!

I don't claim copyright on them or anything, so use away!
Just strange to see your own stuff coming back at you!

From my own experience, just get an electronic converter and leave the transmission alone. Chances are you will be replacing it later anyways once it blows up. Then all you need is a 94-95 v8 used bellhousing. Now your entire setup is bolt in with no mods needed. I believe I still have mine since I swapped to a tr3650. I believe I still have the cross member also if you are hunting down parts.

Have you researched the rest of the swap? If not, don't forget about the ecm. They are different. Mine was already converted by my buddy before I bought it. He swapped the ecm, trans harness, crossmember (I think) and also the pedal assembly, along with trimming of the shifter hole, and shifter console. Also new flywheel and added the pilot bearing.
