Hey guys,

I am removing all of the stock engine wiring from my car. I've already gotten the injector harness removed, and took the front wheels and wheel liners out. I have pulled a lot of the wiring on the passenger side through the fender already, but I was tracing wires everywhere and noticed the headlight harness is tapped into the main harness. I have a good friend who advised extremely not to hack up the harness (I would like to try and sell it). Has anybody removed the wiring completely from the engine bay?

Also as a side note - I am surprised on how much wiring Ford didn't attempt to clean up. I looked over the engine bay and during removal there are a lot of was to lessen the mess of harnesses. Just a little rerouting through the fender and it looked a lot better. Just seemed odd.

Anyways, any insight on removal? I have looked and printed a lot of schematics from veryuseful.com. I couldn't find any good write ups anywhere.

The main harness for 94 Mustangs will cover the following: A/C, TPS, IAC, ECT for processor, ECT for gauge cluster, (8) injectors, Ignition coil, distributor, connector plug to O2 sensors, MAF, Spout connector, TFI module, CCRM, Fan, overflow bottle, and maybe 1 or 2 more itmes. THe lights are not a part of the main harness but it may have a plug/connector underneath the passenger side fender.

I hope this helps

Alright, so I still can't get this figured out. First off, what the hell is this? Its underneath the passenger fender:

Here is everything for the MAF, IAT, CCRM, etc.

Here you can see the opening to the engine bay, where I pulled all the connections through. You can see the headlight harness, and this is at least wrapped in the same loom as the two thick collections on the left of the picture.

Here's the connection:

Driver's side, same thing. Headlight wired (or at least wrapped in the same loom) as the engine harness. This leads to the fuse box. Other end goes over top of the radiator and to the other side.

So. I'm lost. I want to delete the engine harness and run a standalone system. I am not sure if I should cut into the loom. I want to keep the headlights, ABS, etc. Also move the fuse box into the fender well (this should be easy).

Any thoughts?

I run a BS3 in my car and it comes with its own engine harness, I sold the stock one.

I went abit overboard, went thru every harness getting rid of what I didn't need. I also removed a lot from the fender/under dash harnesses. I still use the stock harness for the headlights, power mirrors/doorlocks.
Almost everything else I ditched.

I couldn't count the hours I have into this, along with hiding everything. Was a major PITA but I couldn't stand the way it was.

Good luck

The only way to get rid of what you dont need to is to dive into it head first. Cut all the crappy ford loom and tape off and go through it and you'll see how its laid out. Once you're done and give the harness a fresh wrap of electrical tape it'll be so much nicer and neater.

The Ford loom is fine, it's just dirty from all those years of service. If you can find the same wire loom that the OEM uses, then I would use that. Don't use electrical tape, it leaves a sticky mess behind when you remove it. Use what the professionals use harness wrap, and use electrical tape to secure it at the termination end. Sorry I don't have a link but Pro-M Racing sells it.

You will not be able to reuse any of the ford loom. It will come off in pieces, falling apart, stuck to the sticky as hell fabric tape, etc.

I am with everyone else so far. Dive in and take copious notes. I use a digital camera along with my pen and paper.

I am not a fan of cutting out the wires you don't need. Learn the connectors and just unpin them. It is too easy.

Wear disposable gloves, change them out often cause they will tear doing this kind of work. That sticky crap doesn't come off your hands very easy.

Having done the same as 4Jenna, I ditched the ABS, airbags, emissions control stuff and cruise control. You will be surprised how much comes out when you do that.

Headlights, abs, air bags, horn, starter circuit, alternator harness, A/C harness, body harness going back to the driver's side fenderwell, cruise control are all part of what I call the 'Main Harness' and connected right into the underhood fuse box.

The ECU harness is what you pulled out first after unhooking the EFI harness.

This is what I want to keep. Can anyone tell me what the canisters are under the passenger fender are for? Is that the charcoal canister crap? It has 3-4 brightly colored plastic tubes coming out of it (I don't think they're wires)

Alright I have them all removed for now. I will post a picture here shortly to see what to keep.

Moving on to the passenger side. I have the alternator harness out as well as the heavy battery connections. I need to remove the fuse box to relocate it inside the fender. Where is the connection to unplug the main harness from it? It connects underneath but all I see is wires. I can't remove the bolts because the harness is in the way

It has to be pulled off the metal bracket first. Then the bracket can be removed.

I think Ford super glued these connectors together in front of the ECU. How the hell did you guys get them apart? I've gotten 2 out of the 3:

I've tried every tool and pair of grips I could think of. And yes I pushed the tabs down first. These things are not coming apart

There is a tool for that, a must have if you don't want to break the tabs off. ttp://www.etoolpros.com/automotive-tools/OTC-4460.html
