8.8 Rearend swap

Hello, I am currently in the process of putting an 8.8 in my 65 mustang coupe. I found a rearend from an explorer with discs. I had one side narrowed and I am getting ready to put it back together. My question is do I have to worry about measurements such as backlash to put everything back together? I did not disassemble any other subcomponents such as the ring gear and trac loc unit. Please help because it took me a long time to find this rearend and I do not want to mess it up. Also the whole housing is 1 inch off to the driver side. Will that make a difference on how the rearend operates? Thanks

If all You did was to narrow One side tube, You shouldn't have to remeasure for the selective washers unless too much heat was applied in welding on the flang.
If You removed the pinion gear, I would suggest at this time to take a measurement of the crush sleeve and pick up from Ford the correct selective spacer. Remember the spacers on both sides of the carrier bearings are selective in size and have to go back on the same sides with about 22 thousands .022 end play ring to pinion. The bearing caps also have to go back on the same sides.

Thanks for the reply guys! I canvassed around and found a place that narrowed one side to fit a short 31 spline axle. he charged me 120.00 to cut and straighten out the housing. I got the whole assembly with rear discs for 200.00 and It was in great condition.

I did not remove the pinion gear at all and I remembered where the caps went but the spacers/shims I am not sure about. There is a tapered side and a non-tapered side.

Which one goes where? Thanks

The center of the Explorer 8.8 is offset. So basically one axle tube and axle will be longer than the other. If it's a Mustang 8.8, there shouldn't be any need to cut down one side. Just remove the old control arm brackets and weld on new spring perches. Don't forget to set the pinion angle at -4 dergees.

I just got done putting a 8.8 out of My 91 LX into my 67 Fastback.I had a bunch of people tell me not to do it as it would take too much time and it's not worth the hassle.I am glad I did it.9 Inches are tough but they consume more power to run and the 8.8's are more readily available and cheaper to build. There is also not much strength difference between the two.Yes the 9 is tougher but not by much.I would highly recomend the swap to anyone who is considering it.

mark 7 has the same 8.8 housing but the axles are 1.5 inches longer than the fox to clear the disc bracke hardware. the the sn95 has 3/4 inch longer axles than the fox body mustang. so the marks track is 3 inches longer and the sn95 is1.5 inches wider. all use the same housing. also turbo coupes are 3 inches wider and svo mustangs but the svo has a 7.5 housing. if you want to use the mark 7 for the disc you can use the fox axles and modify the brackets to work if you are good at fabing stuff.

I installed a fox body 8.8 in my 67,but I used 94-98 axle shafts with Bulitt wheels. The 99-04 axle will work but the axle shafts are wider yet(slightly) than a 94-98 axle shaft. If you used some offset wheels similar to the offset used by the factory it will work OK.

I have 11.65 Cobra Rear discs with Bulitt wheels and no spacers.I also bought a kit from Vintage Venom to run 13 inch Cobra Twin Piston PBR Calipers on the front as well. Those have a spacer for the front to correct issues but as far as the rear end no spacers and everything seem to look good.Tires sit pretty much flush with the quarter panel on top.If you would like to see some pics post or PM me your email address and I can send some out as I don't know how to post pics on this board.

Hello,

not to highjack this thread. Short question.
I run a 98 8.8 in my 67 fastback. I would like to convert
to cobra 11.65 rear disc. Will my 15 inch magnum 500
wheels fit?

I am not for sure if they will work with the magnums or not.I know on the front that you need at least a 17 inch wheel.I don't have any wheels similar to those either to test fit on mine. The stock front discs were 10 or 11 inch ??Those clear the magnums so I would think that they should be able to clear on the rear but am not 100% sure.Trial and error I guess.Good Luck.

thank´s

my front brakes are original 10.75 rotors with 4 piston caliper now. Later i convert to bigger brakes and bigger wheels. For now i´m converting only my rear end brake.
I try it.

For the guys who ARE using 8.8's in 67 stangs................

I have a 67 and need to replace my 8" before it blows!

What 8.8" should I look for?

Is there anything that fits without shortening?

Thanks

I would look for a 94-98 rear end if I were you.I personally used the original 8.8 from my 91 LX.The housings are the same. The axle length on the 94-98's is what I needed to run the SN-95 wheels. If you had a foxbody 8.8 around that would work as well.It depends on what wheels you are going to run and if you want to run spacers or order the wheels with the offset you desire. If you are looking for disc brakes,I would start looking for a 94-98 setup.Thats what I would have done but I had a Fox housing laying around, had the disc brakes so all I needed were the axles to convert to 5 lug and to use the brakes I had.If you would like, you can PM me and I will PM you my phone number if you would like to call me.

Thanks.

I am running Magnum 500 wheels.

So, a 94-98 rear will basically drop in without shortening?

If that is the case........I am on that!

94-98 8.8 is 1.5" wider than stock, so each wheel will move out 3/4". I have a 95 in mine and would rather have the fox length. A fox 8.8 is almost the same as a stock 67-68 rear end. A 9" wide wheel with 6" bs and 275/40/17 tire fits nicely and are readily available. With an sn95 8.8 you need more back spacing to run a 9" wheel and they are not as easy to find.
