So I have a 4 cylinder 1993 notch back that I will be swapping a 5.0 into. I have a decent amount for a budget, but I'm looking on what things to do for my engine set up. I'm buying a donor car, it's an 88 ssp that was wrecked, and basically swapping everything over. As far as bottom end, I'm keeping it stock because if I'm not mistaken, that year had forged pistons. As far as heads I've heard AFR 165s are the best way to go with heads, which is probably what I'll use. I have a gt40 cobra upper and lower intake, which I'm gunna have tmoss port the lower. As far as cam, roller rockers, timing, and tuning what are your guys suggestions. I've read that a lot of people keep stock cams, is there a specific cam that others have experienced power increases with? Should I use a double roller timing chain? As far as tuning, I know there is quarter horse and other chips, but I've also heard of people just using fuel regulators on stock tune. What do you guys recommend for tuning for my purposes? Based on what I have listed, what do you guys who have had a similar build estimate for hp and tquality numbers? Thanks in advance for help!

Nothing wrong with a stock cam and 165s but personally, I would go for a set of 185cc heads in your favorite flavor so you have a little room to grow if you decide to have a cam cut one day. As for the QH, there is power to be had even with bone stock motors. The chip and the time you'll spend learning are well worth not having a bandaid on it like you will with just a regulator.

You are going to get 100 different answers. What you want has been done about 10000 times.

You can go with a set of TFS 11r or AFR 165 heads, an either a Crane, TFS or Anderson OTS cam or an Ed Curtis Cam. You'll also need to get a larger MAF, injectors.Plenty of guys running box stock TFS or AFR heads and an OTS cam and making 300 RWHP.

AFR Renegades are great, had these brand of heads on every build I've done. But with stock pistons, the TFS 170 11R heads would be my choice, the PTV is amazing. Those and a custom cam will get you 400hp no problem, with the right intake/exhaust and supporting parts.

Go with a head with a little smaller chamber to bump compression, have Ed(FTI) or any of the reputable guys here, grind you a nice cam, bump up to 24 or 30# injectors/MAF, adjustable fuel regulator, shorty headers, 2.5" exhaust of your choice and a good tune and you'll be solidly in the 300's daily driveable.

306". flat top zero deck, forged 4032 pistons (Mahle)
70mm throttle body
75mm MAF
24 lb injectors
RPM II intake
AFR165 heads
5 speed and 3.55's
Eagle SIR rods stock length (as opposed to refurbishing the stockers, money isn't much different)
5.0 crank 10/10
FTI hydraulic roller camshaft (Contact Ed for the cam.
Aluminum flywheel
Factory harmonic dampener
Ford Racing Hyd roller lifters (I would have re-used the stockers if I knew the FRPP lifters were hit-and-miss)
BBK 1 3/4 coated long tubes. BBK catted H pipe. Flowmaster Force II cat back.

All went into a '93 LX hatchback, original 4 cylinder. I did it right, GT brakes, sway bars, K member, fuel lines, rear discs from a turbocoupe, etc.

I wanted 350 hp. Mine ran excellent, never went to a dyno until after I sold it. I managed 28 mpg multiple times on highway trips. Had some lifter issues which the new owner addressed and had it dyno tuned, and it made 373hp at the wheels, so probalby 400 or so at the flywheel.

It "liked" to be shifted at about 6600-ish. It sounded great. Not loud, but not quiet. Great MPG. Great highway manners. I would build one just like it again if I was to keep the 5.0 in my '92 (going a different direction this time). I wish I'd have kept the '93 but I lost access to most of the tools I had and had no place to work, so it was either (1) pay someone to fix it, or (2) sell it and pick up something that didn't need to be worked on. Ended up trading it for a 2004 Mustang V6, automatic, with a ton of miles....up until last week I had never had to put a dime into it other than gas, oil, filters, plugs/wires/trans fluid/filter, insurance. 320,000 miles and counting. Good car but it ain't my old '93.
