1995 5.0 Cobra - transmission options

I've got a '95 Cobra, blown with a variety of parts that puts out around 500HP to the wheels. Will probably drag race it now and then at the local strip, but currently use her as a daily driver.

Transmission is a fairly stock T-5, rear gears are 3.73.

Current transmission has two problems:
1) Pops out of 2nd gear now and then.
2) The gears aren't correct for the speedo. From what I've read to configure it correct I need to pull the tail shaft.

So I'm thinking of two different options:
1) Pull the transmission and rebuild it. Fix whatever is worn that causes it to not stay in gear, plus put the correct plastic gears in it to get the speedo correct.
2) Go to something else for a transmission. Are there many options that "bolt in" to the '95? (Car seems like a bastard step-child . . . not as much made for it.) Curious what options are out there and what the cost ranges might be. Goals might be lower highway RPMs, or perhaps something I can beat on more without worrying about breaking.

Thoughts/comments?

Get an Astro A5 transmission, good for a TON of power and if you want lower RPM on the highway their gearset plus the stock overdrive gear=.59 ratio out back. Granted, this means you will have a BIG gap between 4th and 5th as far as RPM drop but I had almost the exact same thing with a .62 overdrive in my last car and its not too bad depending on your rear gears and tire size.

Although I never had any RPM issues with 3.73s even with the regular .68 overdrive. Just run a little taller tire out back at 26.5" overall and do 75mph at 2300 RPM.

Astroperformance.com - Your Manual Drivetrain Specialist is where you can get the trans, it is a direct replacement seeing as it is, externally, a T-5.

You also don't need to do the plastic gears although you CAN. Just use a speedcal box to calibrate your speedometer. It wires up in line between the VSS and the speedo and you just set the switches for what ratio you are running and go. Anything after 93 is an electronic speedo so no having to mess with the gears. If you are still dead set on going old school just have whatever new trans you get put together with a 6 tooth drive gear on the tailshaft.

I have a 95 Cobra with a 347 stroker engine so I decided to replace my transmission to a TKO 600. I don't have 500HP "YET" but i got this transmission because i did not want to have tranny problem due to the power i wanna add to the car.

@ 80MPH my RPM is at 2,200 with 3.55 gears on stock tires. I think the tires are 255X45 17R (i think) :)

The only cons i have with this transmission is that it does not have a smooth shift like the T5 but you'll get used to it...also, its a bit louder....bigger tranny = more noise? :)

Just to give you an idea of cost:
2,395 for TKO 600 with .64 OD
400 for carbon ring and mods upgrade(not sure if it was a good upgrade but i went with it)
588 for quicktime bellhousing
60 bucks for a drive shaft spacer you'll need (tranny is a bit shorter than a T5)
90 bucks for Tremec 31 spline yoke (stock is 28 spline)
Recommend a pro 5.0 TKO shifter...it was 170

Hopefully this info helps you out.

I had my t5 rebuilt and upgraded all plastic to brass. You are correct on the speedo for 3.73. I had to change the shaft gear. I did run a Chrysler plastic gear in the speedo housing sensor for a while and it was close to accurate but the teeth got chewed up. I'm only going to be running around 400 hp, but am happy with the trans and cost to rebuild.

Yeah but a rebuilt T5 with the stock gears will still shear the teeth right off on a high HP shift. I mean they can hold up surprisingly well sometimes but the stock gears are so weak.

Another option is to go with a standalone controller and a built 4R. Best of all worlds there. Or you can run with a MVB.

Pushrod 94/95 car with a properly done 408 and and auto... that might be the most VIOLENT ride you'll ever have...

I'm making similar power as you and just put a Astro A5 in my car. I had several conversations with Tony and he was excellent to work with. Got the trans, clutch, etc from him. He also installed the correct gear in the trans and sold me the matching speedo gear to correct my speedo for the 3.73's in my car. The trans feels like a stock T-5 but with the ability to hold a lot more power. Highly recommend Astro Performance.

the Astro A-5 is available with the 94+ input shaft and is the ONLY stronger option that fits like the original transmission using your original bell housing.

Well, okay... G-Force also makes a custom T-5 gear kit that is stronger than stock, but it does not take the torque like the Astro A-5 gears will.

The TKO solution, and anything else that has a pre-94 input shaft length will pose adaptation issues. Those bell housings place the clutch fork at 9:00 rather than the 7:00 position used in the 94/95 bell housings. This often interferes with any exhaust headers that may have been added. In addition, those bell housings are more shallow and will position the tail of the transmission further forward causing the drive shaft to possibly be about an inch too short... Many have adapted these without big issues, but be careful, each situation is a little different.

If you are serious about drag racing it you should also get the upgraded 9310 alloy output shaft, counter gear support plate and billet keys for the 3-4 synchro hub.

If you hve the 3.73 rear gear, just order your transmission with the 7-tooth internal gear. the 6-tooth will also work and will be required if you go to the 4.10 gear.
