The 164 allows for using an 11" clutch. You need a 164-specific bellhousing, block plate, and a starter with the "manual transmission" snout length.



Due to original application, but not to size. Either one is available on the aftermarket with 0, 28, and 50oz balance factors.

 

157 by far and away the most common 99 to 1. Balancing is no different.

 

I figured that was the most common, but other than size, trying to figure out what the differences are in them. I know they use different bell housings. Is that all? Different clutch discs? Different pressure plate mounting? Etc.

Well the 164 is a big bell housing which uses a different converter bolt pattern and the 157t small bell uses a 10.5 bolt pattern

 

I have used both. Running a 157 right know in my AOD. I like this one better since I am running 1 7/8 long tubes. Gained clearance also with my starter.

 

This is a big deal imo

The only thing I would add is the 164th flywheel was originally used in truck applications. FYI if you are searching by vehicle specifics.

I'd guess they were probably used a lot on the M-block truck engines.

Most are 28 oz, but as was stated above they are available in the 50 oz.

That 164t flywheel, a starter, and a block plate (or a modified block plate) will allow you to use a cheap 94+ 3.8 bell housing on your 94/95 5.0 if you are willing to make the car "non-standard"...

But hey, having an 11 inch clutch is an upgrade!!!

 

All 351W were 28oz from the factory. That goes for the flywheel and the balancer no matter the tooth count.
