I read on modulardepot.com about an 04 Aviator fuel pump that is now available. It's supposed to pump more fuel and handle more power than the Focus fuel pumps that some people have tried. Does anyone know anything about this? It costs like $175 and sounds like an excellent affordable option for my Vortech'd Cobra when I get it installed. Wonder how much RWHP it will support?

I care and would also like to know. I wish I could help but the data out there is sketchy.

I have a bit more data. They supposed to be 281 lph pumps and are designed for returnless. This makes them stronger than the Walbro 255s and they should slide into the stock fittings.

Good luck and let me know how it goes. I would need two for my 03 pumps.

Ralph, as I understand it, Ford wanted to come up with a universal pump to work in multiple vehicles. This pump is used in the 04 F150, F250, and the Aviator. I suppose they must also be planning on staying consistent with the Lightning and Harley. Maybe they decided that it was cheaper to have a single part for all of the vehicles, even if it was more than the minimum necessary.

Tell us about the install.. How was it...

I'm anxious to hear the results.
Basically you pay about $185 for a complete fuel pump assembly for an Aviator, you take out the pump itself, throw away the brand new sending unit and housing and wiring. Take the stock bucket apart after you remove it from the tank, swap in the new pump and put it back. Took me right at an hour start to finish but I have a lift to work on.

no cutting, just unbolting. Basically your use only the pump itself from the Aviator and put it in the basket that the stock pump sits in. I didn't have my camera with me but it was pretty straight forward. It definitely looked more difficult when I first pulled it out of the box than it really was.

edit:
You will have to cut the metal clamp off the fuel line that's attached to the Aviator pump to get it out of the Aviator housing.

Here's a step by step:
1. remove the 3 10mm bolts behind the gas door that hold the filler neck up.

2. now use a 3/8" spring lock tool and disconnect the line that runs from the tank to the fuel filter

3. support the fuel tank and remove the 2 bolts that hold the tank straps up.

4. carefully lower the tank till you have about 10-12 inches of clearance between the middle of the tank and the bottom of the floorpan.

5. unhook the 2 electical connectors that are hooked to the pump.

6. remove the six 8mm bolts that hold the pump cover to the tank.

7. push in on the two plastic clips that hold the pump down in the tank.

8. remove the assembly carefully and don't bend the fuel sending unit.

9. swap the aviator pump in place of the stock pump, change only the pump and keep everything else stock.

10. put it all back together and remember to put in a new fuel filter.

One other tip, the less gas you have in the tank the easier it is to work with.
