I just bought my 98 GT and am planning a full detail tomorrow and wanted to know how to make my tailpipes shine. Will steel wool work or what?

Thanks,
Mike

I'm pretty sure they're stainless. DON'T use steel wool. Go to your local auto supply store and get some chrome cleaner, which is just a metal polish. It'll work great.

Nev-r-dull . Mothers mag/aluminum/metal Polish. Wax. In that order.

Wax won't do any good, it'll just burn off once the pipes get hot.

Eagle1 sells a product similar to nev-r-dul. It worked on my pipes that were never cleaned for 26K miles (i bought it used). They came out like brand new.

Hey beirbelly, Why no steel wool on the tail pipes. Wouldn't using the wool and then using some of the mothers metel polish after give the tail pipes a polished shine look. i was just about to try this, this weekend to get my stock pipes to look polished.

Steel wool will leave fairly large, visible scratches on the metal surface. Of course, the finer the steel wool, the smaller the scratches, but they'll never be as small as those of the polishing agents, which polish by making scratches so small that they're less than the wavelength of light, so you can't see them, you just see the surface of whatever has been polished as being very smooth. If you've ever done any bodywork, remember that you start with a fairly coarse wetsand paper, and move to finer and finer grades, until you get to the polishes, which have even finer polishing grits in them.

You can probably get most of the junk off with the rough side of one of those scrubby sponges. The plastic on those things is not hard enough to scratch the metal, but usually good enough to get off the crap, like road tar, etc. that might accumulate on the pipes. Then use the metal polish for the final polishing.

well, you can go ahead and use that steel wool on your tail pipes.....but the scratches that its gonna leave all over them aren't gonna look so good

oh, anybody want to trade tail pipes? i don't like my borla tips, they aren't long enough

What do i have to do then to the tail pipes to get them to look like polished stainless steel. i have already used just the mother metal/mag polish and it did shine them up a bit, but it sure doesn't look like polished SS. thanks again.

On the part of the pipes that are NOT polished at all, i used sandpaper to get it to a finish that would be smooth enough to use the nev-r-dull. Then mothers polish, Then a coat of wax. I know that the wax will not last on the surface but it sure made them shine even more. Didn't think that it would do anything but it did. Don't care if it doesn't bead after a day it still looks better than without.
