Took cylinder heads off and left project unattended because had baby two months premature and and had no time to get back to project between work and hospital. Baby is home now and i went out to check on the stang and the cylinders are rusted. Any insight would be great am i screwed or will it be ok. I sprayed wd-40 in them to prevent this from happening but it did. Can't post pics but there is a fair amount.:(

Should be ok if its just some slight surface rust ( IN ONE LITTLE SPOT?). Make sure it turns over.

Clean out the cylinders with some fine steel wool, and it should be ok.

What I would do: I wouldn't turn it over until you have cleaned most of the rust out as I wouldn't want to risk damaging the rings. Green scotch brite works really well as suggested above. Spray the pad with penetrating oil as this helps keep the rust and fine particles breaking away from the pad stuck to the pad and not falling down on the rings and into the ring grooves. Clean a little and whip out with a rag as you go. Then spray some nonflammable brake clean around the top ring and vacuum out with a shopvac. Turn it over a little to move the pistons on the downward strokes to clean the rest out of those cylinder then turn it back over the other way to do the rest of the remaining cylinders.

P.S. Glad the baby is home and doing well :)

Cosmoline is used in lots of applications to PREVENT oxidation from occurring. Naval Jelly (never seen that unique spelling - GELLY) is used to REMOVE oxidation once it's occurred.

I'd buy a bit of Marvel Mystery Oil and get it into the cylinders. Let it sit overnight. Scotchbrite the cylinders gently to clean them up - then rotate the crank 90 degrees and hit them again, rotate another 90 degrees, etc., etc. Hopefully it cleans up.

Well i used Marvel Mystery Oil and the rust wiped right out with no pitting, thank you.

I was going to vote for the Marvel Mystery Oil. I put it in the flat head six motor of my 1938 Oldsmobile which was seized after sitting for 5 years. Waited two hours, first jogged the motor with a breaker bar and then it actually started with the battery. no damage to the rings. What is Marvel Mystery oil, anyways?

Marvel makes some mighty good oil, I must say. That stuff works great in old cars.
