Here goes, I've been looking for a set of iron GT-40s (not the Ps) and I am having some trouble identifying them, I have searched the forums but can't seem to come up with the answer I need. Do the GT-40s have three bars on the front w/ std. angle on the plugs, while the GT-40Ps have two bars with more angle on the plug? Any help is much appreciated, thanks... Mike

GT-40 3 Bars angle plugs

GT-40P 4 Bars straight plugs
What he said. P heads will also say "GTP" on them while regular cobra or 1st gen explorer GT-40s will just say "GT".

Just an update, picked up a set of iron GT-40s off of craigslist (like 4 miles from house!) today. Thanks for the info everyone!

Insufficient piston to valve clearance. You should carefully check p to v clearance before running the heads. They have slightly bigger intake valves and (perhaps) exhaust valves than the stock e7's. If you were banging pistons with stock heads, you're likely to hit things harder with the bigger valves. And with bent valves in the Explorer heads, you should take them to a machine shop and have them gone over -- with any kind of cam at all you're gonna need to replace the springs - silly not to do a valve job and replace seals while you've got it apart. Sad part is for what you'll have in them once done, you could've gone a long way to a less-expensive set of aluminum heads.....

I didn't mind paying the price versus driving a ways or shipping, looked for at the NMRA race on Saturday and didn't find any so I am happy with it.

powersrare - both are iron; the P's are later model, have a slightly smaller exhaust valve; flow slightly better; have completely different shaped combustion chamber/spark plug angle-location resulting in slightly higher compression ratio and a more efficient burning chamber. However, with the P's -- with many aftermarket headers that aren't 'P' specific, getting some of the spark plugs in and out can require removing the header, and plug wires/boots require work to keep them from getting burned. Also, they're not set up for the HO oem air injection (smog pump fittings) or internal egr ports.
