thats wierd. i know i accidentally grounded the terminal on my old guage.. it stayed at max even when unplugged... try replacing just the sending unit maybe?

There can also simply be a temp differential between the sensors/locations. For example, there's often one between the ECT and the temp sending unit for the gauge (they're at different locations in the system, so it stands to reason). As long as you can reference the differential (if the new gauge doesnt fix things), that's not all bad.

I know that was hard to follow: E.g., on my 94, there is a 1/2 volt drop from the battery to the interior fuse that I used for my aftermarket voltmeter. I simply remember that, and when my volts drop to a reading of 12.5, I know that I really have about 13.0 volts at the battery. Same kinda deal.

I've never been real fond of electric temp gauges (I've had some quirky ones) so I try to avoid them. But AM is great stuff and if they warranty your gauge out, you should be golden.

Good luck.

Well it was cool tonight 55 degrees - so not ideal for testing, but I replaced the guage and sender and things are looking good. Thermometer confirmed 181 degrees at the water pump when the stat opened (stat housing had read 174 until it opened) then both readings leveled out at 184, fans kicked on and temps dropped to 179 and cycled up and down and maintained a steady 180ish degrees and the new guage concured.

So I went for a drive. 185 degrees and holding steady! Hooray!

2 quick blasts down the highway and up the hill I mentioned earlier and temps showed just shy of 195 and settled back to 185 when I slowed down.

Everything looks good in this cool weather. I need a hot day now to really test it out but things look promising.

Thanks to all for the input and support. Hopefully this caper is over.

Alright - just back from a 600 mile round trip to the track - all went well!

The Taurus fan was worth 1 mph for sure, that alone makes it well worth while, i'm solidly in the mid 112s now :)

As for cooling I was a bit concerned starting out on this trip but the car ran beautifully from 180-185 and I could see on the new gauge the fan cycling and the temp dropping. However I have to cross a major mountain range to get to my destination so I ran up some pretty steep hills. Ambient temps were around 82 degrees and going up hill I saw the temps rise and hold at 195, and briefly hit about 200-205 but it came back down when I leveled out, and heading down hill temos dropped back into the 185 range. Is this normal?

When I got to my destination it was about 90 degrees outside and the car was holding steady at 195.

I'll grant you all i'm paying way closer attention to my gauge than most people do but i'm wondering if my car is behaving as it should?

I still havn't put the air dam back on or tried the a/c out.

I just wanted to jump in on this thread and say my brother has a 93gt that does the same things described by many of you and many of the cars in this thread are GT's. the GT front end is mostly to blame! so without a front airdam you wont be getting much air through the radiator thus causing cooling problems. This is most likely the reason for the 93 cobra having a grill opening.. just some food for thought

A very valid point foxbody302.

I wish I'd kept my air dam, now instead of throwing it in the trash! I'll report my findings as soon as I find one in decent shape to install.

I'm sure it will make a differance at speed.

you definately need the air deflector under the radiator support. i have added a piece to mine to get more air into the radiator. due to kicking the botom of the radiator foward for supercharger crank pulley clearance . im loving this cooler weather i can beat the car and she stays real cool .

Chin spoiler replaced - they really do work :)

I barely saw 182 degrees after a highway blast earlier today and she is holding steeady at 180 degrees or less at lights cruise. I think I will turn my fan gain down a bit and try and cruise around 185 for best economy. It was 92 degrees out today.

I havn't tried the a/c yet (needs a recharge) but I think I can finally put this one to bed.

Thanks to everyone for your help and advice.
