OK I have set my timing to 10* BTDC, the car idles like ****. It wants to die doesnt sound good, etc. I turn the idle up to 950 and it still sounds horrible. I bump it up to about 12* and it runs much better. When I hook up the Vacuum advance the car spits and sputters under load. I cannot figure this out for the life of me.

I read somewhere that a car with 9.5.1-9.0:1 compression should run about 38-42* total timing. Is this true?

The motor is a DSS 306, Holley 650 DP, Airgap, and E7 heads. I have a Ford dist. for an 84 Mustang so I can use my vacuum advance. I also was wondering if you read the degrees at the right side of the pointer or in the notch in the middle. Thanks in advance.

I use the right side of the pointer. Do you have any vac leaks?
