ok here is what happen. i towed a 96 mustang with a 2 wheel tow dolly. i had the front wheels on the dolly and the rear wheels on the road while i was pulling with my truck. the mustang was in neutral but it some how went in to gear while i was towing it i think. now i am trying to figure out what could have been messed up on the car because of this. i am thinking either tranny, clutch, or maybe the diff. but i dont know much so i wanted to see if you guys could help.

Drive it first, see what's broke. I would imagine something would've actually had to snap inside the trans in order for you to have been able to tow it. If it were actually in properly in gear, tires would've been squeelin.

i remember reading in a trade magazine about a guy towing a compact car behind his rv. seems that the car went into gear like yours did and hee towed it for a couple hundred miles like that. he didn't realize it until he stopped for gas and noticed that steam was coming from under the hood of the car. car had overheated because cooling fans wouldn't come on and there wasn't enough forced air through the rad. moral to the story is as long as the engine was spinning in the right direction the oiling system still worked and as long as the engine didn't over-rev i don't think that you did any damage. next time, tow it with the drive axles on the dolly.

well i didnt want to tow it with the rear wheels because the front wheels turn a little bit when u tow.......................ok i drove the car and it seems to be the tranny. it wont go into all the gears and it feels like it is grinding alot.

why didnt you tow it the other way around?
yeah if you tow it with the rear up the front tires will curve back in forth eventually swinging the car into a disaster

i dont see why your rear end would be messed up, but i can see maybe your tranny being GONE

I guess that the honda kid does not know that american cars have a steering lock that you are suppose to use when using a tow dolly.

im sure he knew, but thats not any good...theres no way to tell your wheel is lock DIRECTLY straight, even the slightest (not seen by the eye) turn of the wheel would cause it to steer, and at the least wear bad tire tread depending on the drive...

that is exactly why i didnt do it like that. o and one other thing i learned is that the car would have been fine if i took the drive shaft off before towing the car. that way the tranny is safe.

ps. worst thing about all this is that i just bought my first mustang cobra and i cant even drive it. i am so mad. cant wait to get it on the road.

yeah you are right about that and its just a 10 minute job also, only problem there is you need to go to the junkyard and get yourself a spare yoke...soon as you pull your driveshaft and put your front wheels up on the dolly, your car will pour its tranny fluid everywhere

Sorry to hear about your problem. Most of us have learned some (too many) lessons the hard way.

With enough time and money, almost anything can be fixed. :D

any updates...

ok this is what i found out.....

alot of people do what i did. what happens is that when u are towing the car the front is alot higher then the rear so all the tranny oil runs to the rear and the front gears are no longer lubricated so they lock up......

i am buying a used t45 tranny and a ford racing clutch kit in a day or two and my car will be good to go. cant wait!!

Wow, I'm glad I'm reading this post because I did NOT know that would happen.

I assume you rented the dolly. You'd think the rental agent would mention it to his/her customers.

That has to suck.... Go to buy a new car, get home and you cant even drive it. Id be pissed.

Glad I have a car hauler...... F' a dolly......
