I have a mostly stock 95 AODE. My mods are only k&n filter, flowmasters, and timing advance. I am ready to order gears. I have talked to alot of people around here and opinions differ. I am debating over 3.73s or 4.10s. I do about 70% city driving and about 30% highway driving. My car is very sluggish off the line, and I think the 4.10s will help me bigtime there, but I'm afraid I will loose alot of gas milege, top speed, and speedometer accuracy. But most people tell me since my car is an auto, 4.10s will be good, but I am not really experienced in this feild. What do all of you guys think? 4.10s or 3.73s???
 
that is odd.. Maybe my tranny was on its way out, and the shifts were flaring slightly, but even with 373's i would hit the limiter at times, really depending how quick it reved out.. As our AODEs have a 3 second delay between the 1-2 shift, for some dumb reason. You can always try the 410s without a chip, and see how it works, but most likely you will need them.. I also had the U4PO processor.. There are only two, both rev limiters shoudl be around 5,550rpm.
 
I had 4.10s and hit the limiter at the first shift. I switched to 3.73 cuz gas mileage on the highway was pretty bad and my top speed on the highway was a lot lower too. The 3.73 is a better daily driving gear in my opinion. The 4.10s were faster off the line but the difference isn't that big between the two.
 
I've been running 4.10's for a good while now with no problems. I even get well over 20mpg on the highway. :cool:

However, the engine could feel a bit "stifled" if you're still running the stock intake manifold.
 
Some people have shift kits which speed the hydraulic shifting progress which minimizes the problem. There is a timed delay in the EEC between shifts, but you only run up against that if you have a TON of torque - like my car does. Ford put this in so it's easier on the tranny in cold weather. The main problem is the shift initiation points are set at the factory anticipating the engine revving like 500 RPM/sec and with gears they rev faster - like 1000 RPMs/sec. The shift points in the EEC are much lower than when the shift actually occurs, because of this. Part throttle shifts and converter lockup will be off without a chip too - it may not be annoying, but since all this occurs on set MPH/RPM points, it DOES happen with gears because the MPH and RPM s are different as far as DS speed to engine speed goes.

If I were changing gears on a daily driven '94/'95, I'd put 3.55 gears in it. That's a very common gear set on the newer Mustang's 4R70W tranny.

Also, less hassle with all the stuff mentioned above, plus you can get the right speedo drive/driven gear combo to make your speedometer read accurately.

(OK, flame away, but remember I said daily driven street car.)

By the way, there are 3.90 gears available.
Its wierd, and logic may never explain it, but when I got the car I was banging the rev limiter when left in D. Had to manually shift it.
