On my 1980 cobra, im unsure of the rear end in it. It came with a 7.5 i guess? Is that right? But according to the tech calculator, with 215/70r14 tires, and 3000rpm at 65mph, i have a 3.50 rear end gear, and with a 300 horse engine, i was told that a stock diff with snap, but I have done all i can to it, and it doesn't miss a beat. So do i have a 3.50 geared 8.8, or some wonder man stock rear end with 3.50's? Is there a way to tell by looking if it's an 8.8? THanks, adam.

Get a tape measure or ruler. Look at the cap on the back of the diff, you'll see how it's buldged out to clear the ring gear. Measure that and you'll be able to tell real quick if it's a 7.5 or an 8.8.

Yea, a stock 7.5 rear would have cracked into peices a while ago. But can you put 3.50:1s in a 8.8 ?

A 7.5 can hold up to a lot. It really depends on the rear. I had a 7.5 that chipped a tooth, then replaced it with another 7.5, and it's still running with it. Never had another problem. A 7.5 can have a 3.45 gear, and an 8.8 can have a 3.55. Neither has a 3.50. A 9" has a 3.50. There should be a tag on it, but they are shaped different.

diff

the quickest way i know to differntiate between the two is to look at the diff housing from the rear. the 7.5 will have the ears for the upper control arms be above or even with the top of the housing. the 8.8 ears will be below the top of the housing. this makes it a lot easier to tell, especially in the junkyard when it is often times hard to get under the car. just my 2 pennies worth
