I just bought a shortblock that I will be picking up in a week and a half or so. I will be renting a small SUV and putting it in a tire to transport it.

I just realized, I dont know how heavy it will be. My concern is getting it out of the vehicle and into my apartment. Its on the first floor, but there are a few steps to go up to to get to the apartments.

Will this be a problem? It would be me and a buddy if there is enough room for us both to get a handle.

Thanks in advance. Probably a stupid question, but I am ignorant to this.

How big are you and your buddy.
Short block is probably going to weigh about 450lbs.

2 strong guys can handle it no problem

It will likely be very dirty... It weighs about -340 pounds with the crank and pistons. You'll need a bit of help to lift it, but you can rock and "walk" the thing if you traverse level or nearly level ground. Steps will be difficult.

Thanks guys...I am not very big or strong so it looks like I will need to rund up some heavy hitters for a case of beer!

I can already tell this is going to be a project to get it in and then out of the apartment!

Sometimes its easier to lift them when they are upside down, you can put your hands in the cylinders to lift. Its just an easy place to hold onto. Ive moved several complete motors with only two people, its not fun but it can be done. Use your brain and not your back as much as possible.

Take three feet of chain, some exhaust bolts or head bolts that fit through the chain lengths and a 3' section of 4x4 lumber. That will make the carrying easier.

I lifted a 289 short block that was missing 5 or 6 sets of rods and pistons buy myself.....Now I said lift, not move anywhere.....Its pretty heavy, but 2 decent sized guys should have no problem, take it slow...and don't hurt yourselves....

Heavy enough to smash the hell out of all my groceries that were in the back of my truck next to it- I got one out of my truck with the help of 2 boards (a ramp) and a heck of a grip. If you have another person you'll get it done.

2 people should be able to lift one just fine. use your legs to lift not your back. If it still has the oil pan on it, the double sump pans fit alright on a old tire without a rim. if you drive like me your gonna want some straps, so it doesn't roll around in the back. Let me guess your gonna rebuld it in your apartment. And put it all toghehter and then your gonna wonder how and the hell do I get this complete motor out of here and into the car!!

thanks for the help everyone. I feel alot better about the situation

Ryan99,

That would be cool and pretty funny too...but it is just going to sit in the apartment as a shortblock and I am accumulating the rest to be new in boxes. It will get assembled out of the apartment!

For a couple weeks it will be the fresh smell of engine in my clothes closet every morning! LOL
