I have been trying to decide which cam to run in my 5.0. I have a low mile cobra that we have done a PIH/A9l conversion, exhaust, 3"73's and the usual bolt-ons. I want to modify the motor but not sure which way to go. Right now it runs so strong, idles perfect and is a torque monster. It almost scares me to mess with it and have problems. I have already purchased a FRPP/powerdyne #9 supercharger, AFR 165's, and GT-40 upper, 65mm TB, 77mm mass air etc. None of the items are on the car yet. How would these items work with a stock GT cam with 1.7's? I thought maybe with the heads and blower, the cam may be adequate. Would I gain much by stepping up to a #2031 or crower #15511 or would I just end up with problems. What would you suggest?

It just so happens that I have almost the exact same setup you're going to do. I stuck with the stock cam for right now because it idles great and there are no issues, sure the others will give more power but may require some tuning or have drivability issues. I am very happy with how it runs and the blower isn't on yet, car pulls great. I hope to get times as soon as the weather co-operates. I'd run your stock cobra cam since it's a little better than mine. I'm sure others will have opinions

I was under the impression that the cobra cams are not as good as the GT version. I have a Ford book that said that when ford put the GT-40 heads, intakes etc. on the cobra motors with the GT cam, it lacked some low-end torque, which ford said was unacceptable for a production car. So they put the production cam for cougar in the cobra motors to gain low-end grunt. The specs show that the cobra has around 6 degrees less duration than the GT cam. Kinda weird! Barry Shepard who does factory racing told me back in 95 if you have a cobra to get a GT cam and put in it.

xspower,
You are right about the cams. The GT has a better cam.
What is your budget like? You could get a custom cam with great power and drivablity. Something to think aboout.

My budget is not real good. I have 2 kids in high school, both driving, so my projects take a lot longer to do than before wife, kids, dog, fish etc.

I just finished my fresh rebuild with the a stock shortblock, dart sr heads, tfs street intake, vortech sc trim 10lbs, 30lb injectors, 75mm throttle body,3.55 gears, stock t5

WIth this combo on street tires i went 12.47@118.24
and on slicks spinning i went 11.65@118.76

THis combo is an ablsolute beast on the street, i can drop it at 65mph in third gear, and easliy smoke the tires:evil:

With some more fine tuning, and some actual suspension work, i think mid to low elevens should be possible

Stock cam with 1.7's....see sig

(A-trim)2.95" pulley on top....6.87" crank pulley. I wanted to try a 2.8", but never got the chance. Saw 10-11lbs at 6000rpms.
