I've a pretty basic question. Why does an auto maker choose to go with a particular form of power adder? Ford seems to be predisposed to superchargers. Chrysler seems to be going with turbos. Why? Is it economics, package limitations, reliability? I understand why someone would choose centrif. over roots, but why turbo over supercharger?

There is no simple answer. All of those things come into play on the OEM level.
