there is a small hole(about the size of the dipstick hole) on my new engine and i have nothing from my previous engine to cover it with. it is in the timing cover around where the pointer is. it is not threaded and i think it leads down to the oil pan so it definitely needs to be covered. any ideas of what to block this with?

I'm pretty sure that's a provision for a dipstick, and it does go down to the oil pan. I *think* Ford offers a plug for that. Where'd you get the timing cover from?

Yup definitely sounds like an earlier timing cover with the dipstick up front, normally a front sump pan set-up.

If it was off the car you coudl tap it with a small pipe thread tap and put a pipe plug in it. If it's in the car then you may be able to find a small plug, like a frost plug, to drive into the hole.

When in doubt there is always silicone:D
