I had just replaced my U joints and my tail shaft yoke, along with the tail shaft bushing and seal. On my first time out, I shifted 1-2, then 2-3, and right when I went 2-3, my Ujoint must have came apart, and my tail shaft housing cracked in half. I dont know if anything else is damaged or not. After I removed the tailshaft housing, the tail shaft seems to have a little play in it, but I dont know if it is normal or not. I also dont know if any thing else was damaged. How can I tell if anything else was damaged, and what should I do?\

It is a PA Comp C4

Thanks in advance,
James

PS, where can I get a replacement tailshaft??

You should be able to get a tailshaft from any C4 in a junkyard, they're all the same except for 4wd obviously.

The output shaft will have some slop in it, what direction is the slop in? side to side, front to back?

If there weren't any sudden stops of the tranny i would think it'd be ok still. What kind of u-joint was it? My friend got a set of greaseable ones from AutoZone for his Yukon and broke one, turns out the grease hole was drilled off center and that caused it to fail.

what do you mean by "sudden stops of the tranny", I am not sure if it suddenly stopped or not, all I know is that something went "boom", and I found a U joint with 2 of the caps off (the ones for the yoke), and I found the yoke still in the trany, and the tailshaft housing cracked like hell. but like i said, i can still turn the tailshaft. not sure if thats a good sign or not, just trying to think positive.

also, would anybody other then a junk yard have one, and how much am I looking at paying?

thanks,
james

Well, if it beat around enough to break the tailshaft housing it could've broken something. Basically the things it could hurt is the output shaft bearing/bushing, and the output drum and related components if it wobbled too much.

I guess a transmission shop or a Ford dealer might be able to get one, but a junkyard would be where I'd look. I got a whole C4 for $30, so you shouldn't pay over 20-25 for just the tailshaft housing, if even that much.
