Hey guys

I have an '87 GT 5 speed that I just got this monday, it's my first car with any real power and RWD. Anyway, I was messin around going around a corner from a dead stop, hit the gas hard and dumped the clutch a tad, obviously I was going sideways.. but i was giving it way more throttle than it needed and i was at about 6000rpm (give or take a couple hundred rpm) for a few seconds. anyway, how much harm did i do? engine has 61,000 miles, most likely heavily beat miles.

The stock tach is so off in these things it's a joke. I regularly hold my car near an indicated 7000 RPMS, but I know it's only 6100.
Do you work for Autometer? ;) j/k :) I guess a lot of stock tach's are off but mine's correct, I checked it against another tach, and it shows the proper rpm for mph.

Like everyone says these motors are tough, mine's seen a little over 6K rpm on N2O and still runs strong. That happened at about 170,000 miles too.

I mainly know from autox my car, and hitting the stock "rev limiter" alot. Now I have an MSD limiter, set at 6100. If I hit it, the stock tach will show about 7000.

Later on, after getting my car dynoed a few times, and seeing other Fox stangs get dynoed, the driver will stop the pull at an indicated 6000 rpm, and the dyno print out will show that power was cut around 5200. To get a dyno pull to a full 6000 rpms, you need to let the stock tach climb to around 7000. The tach seems to get more inaccurate at higher rpms, its possible FORD did this on purpose to ease warrenty issues.

7000 rpms

you should be fine with 6000, my car doesn't seem to have a rev limiter on it. It revs to 7000 and still runs strong. I know a guy who beats on his stang and doesn't even let off the gas when he shifts. His car has 180,000 on it and it still runs strong.

later,
Brian.

if your car has an eec 4 computer, it has a rev limiter. Of course the stock 6250 rpm limit can be modified with a chip.

just like everyone else said your perfectly fine. My throttle got caught one time at WOT and was bouncing off the rev limiter for about 5 seconds or so not to mention everytime I race I run her up to 6000. Your motor is perfectly fine. Mine has got 125,000 and still running strong.
