It was asked some time ago weather it was worth converting to the new mustang breaks from 1996-2004 cars and the answer was NO (see attached thread)

forums dot corral dot net/forums/showthread dot php?t=700746

But recently I saw an ad at the top for corrral

vintagevenom dot com/shelby-gt500-brake-and-wheel-conversion

That sells a kit to convert to the GT500 brakes for $395. You can get the GT500 calipers and rotors for under $500 from e-bay.

So for less than $900 I can have 4 piston brembo brakes assuming I have 18" wheels. The cheapest Cobra R kits I can find are over $1300. What do you think? Is it worth doing and will it work???

sorry I cannot post link yet so copy, past and replace the "dot" with a "."

It's not just the brakes, you would also need new rims. The 94-04 rims use a much smaller offset and you won't clear the brakes.

So if you add the cost of new rims, plus this kit, plus the actual brake parts..... you might as well just buy the cobra R kit.

Unless you are taking your car to an open track and your current brakes are overheating, there is no point in upgrading. It is tempting though.

Nope, as stated above unless you do a lot of track, i think 13" cobras should be fine.

Like diesel I am looking for an autocross champ. I have the handling I am looking for and definatly have the power but I lack the stopping power needed. For autocross with speeds below 90mph, what is the best brake setup then???

I like 17 inch wheels. Tires are cheaper to replace and you will be going through tires. Your best options then would be either 13" Cobra PBR's or brembos. Both will stop the same, but the brembos have more heat capacity for open track events. Get some aggressive pads like hawk HP Plus pads or Carbotech AX pads, and it will greatly help with reducing your braking distance.

Diesel, excellent point about tires! And the PBR brakes can be had for short change when compared Brembo.

people would be surprised at how well stock (with good pads, ss liens and brembo rotors) cobra brakes can perform when the rotors are seasoned and the pads are bedded.

I agree I've had stock cobra and the pbr+brembo+hawk+ss lines and the difference was HUGE. I'm very happy with this setup on my 98 vert. Wouldn't pass up a chance to goto R calipers tho :D

Awesome choice. Those are good looking calipers. They will work very well.
