I just got a '94 3.8L for my wife's new daily driver, and needed to get somg(CA BS), but this led me in a round about way to discovering that the check engine light is colored over or disconnected, no smog cert, and there are some codes which I am having trouble with. First I have a MAF circuit low input. It turns out the connector was sitting in the housing unconnected to the MAF sensor. Second I have a lack or H02S11 and H02S21 switch.
When we connected the MAF to the harness the car hesitated upon acceleration and backfired, similar to the way my Tahoe reacts with out the MAF sensor connected. Please tell me someone else has experienced this or knows what may be causing this. There have been some goofy things done to this car prior to me purchasing ie. incomplete stereo hook-up, jerry rigged throttle cable, emblems pulled without holes filled, goofy do it yourself paint job...

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I need to get this fixed to get teh smog to put the car in my name.

Thanks.

Next day

So I followed the Chilton's instructions to test the MAF by back probing the terminals, there was 12+ volts to the b+v wire, the signal and ground wire provided about a constant 0.06V and did not fluctuate with RPM increase. This means I have a bad MAF sensor right??? I do not know what the "REF" wire is for so I thought I'd see how it reacts. I backprobed the REF and ground and came up with a voltage shich bounced between 0.6 and 1.2 volts at idle and jumped to 1.5 to 1.6 volts with increased RPM. What does this mean??? Is the MAF sensor bad? What other cars share the same MAF sensor. I'm tight on cash at this point and would like to get one from a junk yard if I can. Is it the same with all '94 mustangs? Is it the same as 94-95 Taurus's etc...

Any help would be appreciated. thank you.

Next Next day

One of my brother's friends has a '94 5.0 and let me nab the Mass Air from it, as he has it down to install Heads, Intake, etc. Traded out his MAF for mine and it appears to be working correctly. We'll try to get it smogged tomorrow. Cross your fingers there are no more gremlins, and alot more gas milage.
