Just double checking my machine shops work and not sure if I have a problem or not.
I had them fit the rings, they said they set them up at .018 top and .016 second.

Here's what I measured.

Top / Second
1) .020 / .019

2) .020 / .019

3) .018 / .022

4) .023 / .023

5) .019 / .019

6) .022 / .021

7) .026 / .019

8) .026 / .018

Thoughts?

Jesus. That’s pretty sloppy.

.018 is a little tighter than I’d run, depending on what you’re doing with the engine.

The range is pretty big, and idk why the second ring is tighter than the top.

yeah, I paid for that sloppy work. I guess the guy got distracted or something.

The engine is NA. I have no plans to use nitrous or boost.

The formula sheet in the ring set recommend .018 top and .016 second.

these are 1mm 1mm 2mm rings, I don't know if that changes the desire to have a larger second ring gap or not.

Current thinking is that the larger second ring gap reduces flutter when combustion gas gets trapped between the first and second ring. Can actually help the first ring seal better. So if .018 is recommended for the top, the second would be around .020.

Regardless, I wouldn’t want there to be a .008 swing from cylinder to cylinder. I’d be pissed.

****, a large ring gap wouldn’t be something I’d be concerned about. I’d be more upset at how different they are. If ring gap isn’t consistent, what do the bearing clearances look like? Just kinda seems careless

yeah, I'm not sure how much it matters regarding the size but I could have done the same level of work in my garage. I was expecting more.

I'm rebuilding due to a roller lifter failure.
It's really hot here in my garage and it he was doing other work for me (touch hone, new rings, fit bearing, etc).
I was thinking to get it back together faster and since it hot as heck here.... I'd pay him to do it.

Yeah, rings were off the pistons when I measured. They were in the cylinder about an inch.

Just spent an hour out in the garage and this is where I'm at now:

Top / Second
1) .020 / .023

2) .020 / .023

3) .020 / .023

4) .023 / .023

5) .020 / .023

6) .022 / .023

7) .026 / .023

8) .026 / .023
