Assembling another motor, and while I was checking piston to valve clearance I came up with a problem (maybe). The intake valves I am using are the largest I have ever installed, and as such I noticed that the side clearance between the valve and the piston valve relief was very very small. What is the acceptable clearance?

I have about .020", but I think I see the problem. I am measuring with no rings on the piston, and the piston is all the way towards the exhaust, making the valve appear to be closer to the relief wall than it really is. I will measure again with rings on the piston.

After checking again, I only had .025", so I ground another .030" on every piston. Sucks to remove that beautiful coating on the Mahle's, but what you gonna do?
