obd1 to obd2????

i was talking to a guy that has a dyno and he told me that foxbodys are obd1 and to tune them you have to get a chip burnt, witch i already knew. then he told me that if i got an engine harness and computer from a 96-98 explorer with the v8 that i could convert it to obd2. this way i wont have to get a chip burnt and he can tune it right in his garage and he said that i could get a better tune this way. i already bought everything but i just want some input on this first. anyone heard of this or done it?

There are other "piggyback" programmable tuner options that will allow you to access all the system parameters, tables, functions, etc.... and tune it, w/out the hassle of doing a conversion to an OBD-II system. Tweecer R/T, PMs, EEC Tuner...to name a few.

will this conversion work though?
Work it will...... but at the expense of adding a few steps that could be easily avoided by getting a programmable tuner for the EEC-IV, which you will need anyway, but for the EEC-V (OBD-II)..... YCYDYP though.
i paid 40 bucks for the harness and computer so it was cheap enough for me. is there anything else that is needed to do this conversion?
Joel, your acronyms are out of control. :)

It's not just the harness.....

DIS ignition system = need 2 coil packs + camshaft position sensor shaft + CMP sensor + CKP sensor and hardware + spark plug wire set + computer + ....+.....+.... the labor and time involved............. = it's not plug-n-play. IMHO....it would be easier and less expensive, to buy a Tweecer R/T + WB, learn the logic and tune..... + the wiring will continue to be "stock looking"....

Thanks!.... :salute:
We did it on a Gen 1 Lightning - You have to find a donor vehicle with a distributor and if you have an auto tranny, the same type of tranny. Ours worked really well - we could flash the computer and do OBD2 datalogs with it. It WAS a lot of work though. I think we used one from a '96 5.8 van.
