I have a 1996 f-150 ( I know, not a mustang) with a tired 351w. I want to make some more power along with a rebuild so I’m thinking a 408 stroker. My e4od and borg Warner 1356 are being rebuilt and getting a stage 2 shift kit put in. Shooting for 450 - 500 at the crank. Anyways I’m trying to decide on heads. It needs to pass all NY inspection along with the dreaded smog test. It’s a 96 so obd 2 inspection. I would love afr 205s with the egr and air pump hookups but I can really find them. I found afr 185s with all the smog stuff which would be ok but a little restrictive. It also said that they were legal in all 50 states for 1995 and older vehicles, not 96. Is there such a thing as a street legal afr 185 or 205 for a 1996? Other brands that are street legal and reputable? Thanks In advance for any help!

to be legal, must have a carb EO#, and all emission devices that came with the car must be present and functioning

to get that all to work you will need a tuning device that can do that

I'm glad that I don't have to worry about any form of emission testing. 😎
Lol must be nice... Ny sucks!! Indy2000 I plan on leaving all that stuff present just need to find a good flowing head that can hook up to them. I plan on getting it dyno tuned somewhere when it’s done. Will they be able to tune it to smog legal levels or will I have to do that with a special controller?

Get a mailing address in NJ. Problem solved for emissions.

Make sure that 1356 doesn't just get a glance over. The torque arm for the oil pump wears quite a notch in the case. Make sure that gets addressed or you will regret it.

EPA listens everywhere, and state emissions is trumped by federal

Yea, don’t think I’ll do what he said anyway. I want a nice street truck but nothing real crazy. Maybe 450 at the crank. I would like to keep it completely legal with size, noise, and emissions. I do appreciate the transfer case comment though bassman.
