I have a 96 gt that had the motor switched out by ford in the early part of 99 before I owned the car. I worked at a ford dealership for a while, and have driven many mustangs. Ive raced a 99+ mustang gt and it was neck and neck. Both auto's. Mine is bone stock except for removal of the air silencer. Any easy way to tell if I have a 99+ motor? thanks for your help.

If you have coil on plugs its a 99+ If you have coil packs and spark plug wires than its a 96-98. That should be the easiest way to tell.

If they swapped a 99+ engine into his 96 it would probably still have the coil packs & spark plug wires. That's the easiest way to do it.

A very easy way to tell, if your oil filler is on the passenger side valve cover, you are looking at a 99/00 engine. Also, your valve covers might have a label that says either "Windsor" or "Romeo" somewhere on it. Windsor would be a 99/00 engine, romeo would be 96-98 (and 01+).
