I've been trying to scrounge up a manual steering coupler from a junkyard for my manual rack, but I can't find one anywhere. Flaming River makes a straight coupler that's 2 inchs long with the manual rack/pinto spline on one end, and a 3/4 ID hole on the other. Has anybody used this coupler rather than the universal joint? The ends are the same as the u-joint, but there's obviously no flex. I would guess that the stock rag joint doesn't have a whole lot of flex either, I assume it's only there for NVH reasons. The straight coupler can be had for $22, the u-joint is $45+, and the manual adapter that bolts to the power steering shaft at the rag joint is $70. I'll admit I'm cheap, but not to the extent of killing myself because my steering fails. Let me know if anyone has used this straight coupler, and how they got on with it (obviously the shaft needs to be cut and pinned or welded).
