installing a thermostat for electric fan - need advice

I am installing a electric fan that is controlled by a painless (wiring) relay and thermostat. I have 2 choices on my carb'd stang to put the therm*

1. Is on the water neck itself right infront of the Big thermostat.
2. Is the water cross over that is where I put the water gauge temp sending unit (for dash temp gauge)

Which is the better place for the control of the electric fan??
And if I put it in front of the big ol therm* will it get in the way of the movement of it??

I installed my switch in the T-stat housing where that machined hole is. I drilled oti out and tapped it for the sender.
