installing a tri-ax shifter but cant break the old box loose says to hit with a block of wood but that **** didnt work

2X4, big hammer. Wedge it in between the tunnel and the shifter and beat on it with the hammer a couple of times down the axis of the 2X4. Or just drive it for a little bit, let the car warm up, and it should come right off with minimal force.
Cold: hammer and wood 99 GT (friends)
Warm: Bare hands. 98 GT (mine)

If you're careful about it, the tire iron that comes with the car works nicely. The tip has a nice lip on it, and you can just hook it under the edge of the factory shifter and pry up. Just make sure to protect the center console with a cloth or something, and don't pry so hard you break it.

I've done it with this technique for multiple cars, and it's always worked like magic.
