Just got ready to install the driveshaft on my 88 GT 5.0 into the new Tremec 3550. At the end of the tailshaft where the driveshaft slips onto the output shaft there is a black rubber "bushing" around the output shaft just inside the tailpiece seal It has teeth that fit perfectly around the output shaft. It appears to be about an inch or so deep. I thought it was a protector put on for shipping. But when I try to remove it, tranny fluid leaks out. This led me to believe it is to just be pushed in with the driveshaft. However, if I'm wrong and push it in, I won't be able to get it out. There is nothing in the instruction manual (downloaded from Tremec) describing this or what to do with it. Anyone know what this is and what I'm supposed to do with it? Thanks, Mark

prolly just a plug to keep fluid from leaking...trans wont leak after drveshaft is in.take it out..

You think so? Sure would be nice if an instruction manual came with it. Had I known that was to be removed, I would have waited to fill it with fluid. God only knows how much is going to come out before I get the stupid driveshaft in place.

fastbird91 is right. I just installed a brand new TKO in my car. That rubber bushing is just for shipping and to keep dirt out. You take it out before installing the driveshaft. The tranny itself has a gasket that seals around the driveshaft yolk to keep the fluid in.

Save that rubber plug though, if you ever need to take your tranny out for a clutch change or something....you can plug it up and salvage your fluid.

If you read the tag on the transmission, it says it is there for shipping purposes and can be left on there. It does not need to be pulled off, but i did it anyway.
