'97 Cobra
All stock besides gears, CIA, and high flow cats with no mufflers.

It started when I was driving normally one morning. Oil and filter not showing any signs of metal or bearing material. It's coming from the passenger side for sure and you can feel it in the valve cover. It isn't continuous and only happens in at certain RPM ranges and right when you rev it. It sounds higher than a rod or wrist pin and isn't a far enough forward for me to think it is a tensioner. Just wanted to see if anyone has seen/heard something similar to this.

Here is the video.

Was the knock sound higher in the engine still? Maybe I'm in denial but don't rod knocks usually happen continuously no matter what the rpm? The lack of anything in the oil also makes me wonder. I'm by no means saying you're wrong just wondering. :)

Do you still have your video I could check out?

Thanks for the reply too!

That is a rod bearing..... Sucks to hear that, man. Sounds just like mine did when it ate a bearing a few years back. It's a sound one doesn't forget lol.

Sorry to hear this.

Is there any "root cause" for the majority of these rod bearing failures? i.e. low oil level - starvation, high rpms, dry start after sitting for weeks, stock bearing material is crappy? Just curious what everyone thinks is the cause as this is a recurring theme...

From what I have read and seen it is USUALLY oil level, power adders and abuse. A friend ended up with rod(s) knock after driving his 98 Cobra twice drunk, I am positive he ran it up against the rev limiter many times and ways.I think for the cost of the cars they are designed to be driven normally and with occasional romps through the gears. If you want to do more I believe you have to build it up that way.Sure the old 5.0's were pretty bulletproof but even the 5.0 Cobra couldn't keep up with these cars and get 27-28mpg. Everything is a trade off involving money. I have 141+k and still running strong, but I don't usually get close to red line. it really isn't necessary, that is the joy of it you can usually just tickle it and get ahead of most everyone.

If you stop driving it you may get lucky I have had them just start making noise and I was able to pull the pan locate the rod with play in it pull the head and piston/rod on that cylinder and rering it with a new rod and go with no damage to the crank journal.

Thanks for the feedback guys. It's been parked since it started making the noise. I might just pull pan and see if I can replace that bearing. Thanks again guys!
