Alright here goes. I have been using the Accel Gen 6 for about a year now. Last week I decided to step up to the new and improved Gen VII. After saving damn near every penny I could spare I bought it and installed it this weekend.

After getting the harness squared away, routing all the wires neatly, making sure I had good quality connections (all shrink wrapped) everything looked great. I started it up (first try) set the TPS and fuel pressure I backed it out of the driveway and drove it around for about 2 miles. I got back to the house pretty stoked about my new system. I wanted to drive it to work the next day so I went over everything once again double checking the plug wires weren't touching the headers, making sure the power steering pump hose wouldn't burn on the crossover pipe, making sure I had no fuel leaks, etc, etc, I felt it was road worthy. I closed the hood and waited for morning.

I got ready for work started the car up and let it idle for a few minutes to get some temp on the gauge. Once that was good once again I backed out of the driveway. Well I headed out into traffic and got about an 1/8 mile away from the house. I was doing about 45 -50mph when I noticed FLAMES coming out of the vents in my Mach 1 hood. I pulled over as fast as I could, popped the hood latch and ran to the front of the car. I didn't have my fire extinguisher w/ me (stupid , stupid). All I had was a cup of coffee in my hand, I threw it in one of the vents and opened the hood. I saw 2 fires, one was in the front directly under the dual sync distributor. The harness was in flames. The other fire was behind the intake on the wiring harness. I ran back inside the car, grabbed my other cup of coffee (its a 35 mile drive to work) and threw it on the flames. No help. I started digging the dirt up and throwing it on the fire. Fortunately a guy ran up gave me a fire extinguisher and I got the fire out. The fire department got there just as I put it out.

The investigation from the fire marshall said the distributor harness caused the fire. He said he could tell the fire started there because of the way the car was burnt.

Wonderful, just friggin wonderful. I have owned this same car for 11 years. NEVER has it caught fire, nor has it ever been in a wreck and this happens. What I wanted to know is if ANYONE has had an experience such as mine with the Gen VII. BTW, I have asked a few companies and they didn't have a clue. One guy suggested it was a fuel leak. Well I hooked up the fuel pump direct (Weldon 2025) and let run for a few minutes while I wiggled the hoses and fittings and not one small leak. Hell, my hose that goes from the pass side around the distributor to the FPR is damn near melted but it still isn't leaking. Very thankful for braided line.

Again, has anybody encountered a problem like this? I am sick to my stomach that I spent $2350 plus shipping and I have no more than a few miles on it and this happens. Thank you for listening

Michael

Dude.....................
I thought you were kidding the other night when you said you were gonna cut the top out and burn trash in it. Anyhow, I am working nights, but will try to catch up with you this weekend to help out getting it squared away.

Man, you have had nothing but gremlins and the Reaper after that car.

What's the word, who's going to foot the bill for this one?

Ohh you would never guess! Me! The new harness will cost $650 and some change. The Dual Sync distributor is $300 and the wiring harness for it is $50. Add all of this up and then tack on shipping. I haven't even added the possibility that the computer might be hurt. I simply can't afford this crap anymore.

P.S The wife is about as hot about this as my car was

Thats rough - best of luck with things. Maybe Accel will work up a deal with you considering the circumstance. I'm sure they'll claim no negligence on the part of their product but maybe they'll help you out.

Let us know what happens.

65_289_Coupe, If I wouldn't have to take such a loss on everything it would be a great possibility.(Weldon FP/ 72lb inj/intake)..... I did however, convert my 85 Turbocoupe T-Bird from a carb 302 to an A-trimed carbed 302. I do have to say it works. I picked up 7mph in the 1/8. I went from 84 to 91.6 w/ no other changes and thats with an AOD.

Fastlane, If Accel will not help me (many people are saying they should replace for free plus the damage to the injectors hood and everything else) then I might have to do that. Then again I will need injectors and a custom chip...Arrg Oh yeah and a blow through mass air.

How do you post pics on here. I have about ohhh lets see...about 34 to choose from. If you want I could try to show you a couple.

Have you had any luck in rebuilding your system? Did anyone ever figure out exactly what went wrong? Who (if anyone) stepped up for some new parts?

Hey thanks for asking. Well, after several phone calls to Accel, Job Spetter and George at Turbo Tech, nobody could figure out what could have happened to it.

I had almost given up when George took pity on me and helped me out with the harness. (Great person/company to deal with) I still need a few things like, dist cap, tps harness, and a sensor or two. I might need to get up to 3, 72lb injectors and a 3bar map sensor. The injectors are a little crispy but so far they aren't leaking. I haven't started the car yet to know for sure what is really bad and what isn't. I might get a chance this weekend to try it out but I am a still a little nervous. I don't completely trust it yet.

I will let you know.

I also wasn't able to rebuild the harness at all. When I sent everything back to Accel they said yep, it burnt, but we can't say what started it. You will have to get another one. I really hate to buy things twice...... The wife has given me some guidance to go by....if you want a part for your car, you need to save enough money to buy it twice because you know with the luck you are having you will have to. (2 turbos, 2 gen 7's, 3 engine rebuilds, 2 anti roll bars, 2 sets of head gaskets[ I had to have my heads o-rings twice, the work the first time wasn't right, go figure] two programs for the gen 6 dfi, and there is more but I am tired of thinking about it. Oh yeah, this is all within 17 months and I have been deployed for almost 7 of them!!

Later,
