Anyone know how a fully dressed 03 Cobra motor compares with say a fully dressed 351 or 460? I am just kind of concerned my 03 motored 90 notch is gonna be super front heavy even with the tubular suspension.

I did this comparison a few years ago as I was considering a sohc or dohc swap. The following data was compiled by inquiring about engine weights from ford racing and sean hyland motorsports:

Ford Engine Weights (V8)
• 302 GT40 (Al Heads) - 425 lbs
• '03 Mach 1 4.6L DOHC w\intake - 614 lbs
• Navigator 5.4L DOHC (Iron block, Al Heads) - 660 lbs
• 351 w/Al Heads - 545lbs

Note: DOHC intake to oil pan ~550 lbs as quoted by Sean Hyland Motorsports.

Pushrod motors win the the weight department. I have a photo to show the size comparison between a standard 302 pushrod motor and a DOHC 4.6L behemoth. I can't upload the stupid thing from my hard drive for some reason. But if you check the Ford Racing Performance Parts Catalog online they give the dimensions of each motor.

Yeah I knew this thing was heavy when I had it hanging on the cherry picker, U read of all the good running 351's and 460's so this combo shouldnt be much off that, I was just concerned about it transferring weight at the track and being such front weight biased since the little foxbody notchbacks are so light in the ass. Going off your calculations and comparing this motor to the 5.4 I would say its pretty similar to the 5.4 with the addition of the blower/intercooler.

I know. In theory the OHC engines are better but ford did not keep weight in mind. Not to mention the center of gravity (i know this design parameter is too much for a non sports car company). I read somewhere that the engine/transaxle combo from the Ford GT is 900 lbs...yikes!

This site has a more comprehensive list of engines and weights than I can find last time I researched this topic:

http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts/category.asp?catID=56&catdesc=Complete Engines

837 lbs for the SVT DOHC Supercharged 5.4L motor...damn.

No way the 4.6 aluminum DOHC comes in at 425lbs. 500-525 I'll believe.

I saw an aluminum block Windsor 427 packing 575hp NA ans weighing in at a svelte 375lbs. If my 5.3L teksid doesn't work out that'll be my next stop.

Is the aluminum 4.6 block really that much lighter than the iron? I thought people always said like 68-75 pounds or something. If thats true how can the DOHC 4.6 complete engine be 75 pounds lighter with 2 more cams, way bigger heads, aluminum two piece intake instead of plastic, more timing chains, etc? Somebody needs to weigh the blocks to see what the real difference is.

I have weighed a 302 shortblock and a barely 302 block on my shipping scale

Stock 302 Shortblock with crank, rods pistons but no cam, no timing chain, no timing cover and no oil pan was 184.85 pounds.

Stock 302 Bare Block w/ Main Caps, 125.70 LBS

I figured as much for the bare block as this is what ford told me. I also looked up the wieght of an all aluminum DART 302 block and it was something like 90 lbs. I'm going with what SHM and Ford racings website tells me about DOHC engine weights.

I just had a complete aluminum 4.6 shipped to me minus the intake. It was complete with c4, converter driveshaft, shifter, cooler etc. With the pallet it weighed 660.

When I built a 99 Cobra engine I had a chance to weigh the parts up on a 400 lbs shipping scale.
Complete 32V heads with cams - 62.5 lbs. each
Short block (aluminum block, crank, rods and pistons) - 154 lbs.
99 Cobra intake with throttle body and fuel rails - 31.5 lbs.
Assembled short block with heads, oil pan, timing cover, water pump and stock flywheel - 369 lbs.
That makes a long block about 400 lbs. without exhaust manifolds.
Alternator - 13.5 lbs.
Power steering pump with pulley - 7 lbs.
A/C compressor - 15 lbs.
Stock flywheel - 21 lbs.
