The one advantage that the late EECs have over the earlier units is that in 2003+ they support CAN bus. CAN bus opens up a whole world of customization possibilities, but the main thing I was looking at it for was the ability to query the EEC for a specific parameter over the CAN OBD2 interface, say coolant temperature and drive a PWM control for electric water pump, e-fan, etc.
