Just purchased a carbed 85gt with aftermarket heads, manifold, cam and some other work. Problem is, the previous owners didnt install the cam, and upon calling up the owner before them, I found he wasn't sure of the origins of the cam either. I just purchased an msd pro billet distributor, and the last thing i want to do is tear up the cam gear...yet I have no way of knowing the proper gear to use. Just wondered if anyone had any recommendations on what to use...I figured using a bronze gear would be safe, and possibly give me indications of whether the cam is steel or billet based on its wear...would immediate wear indicate the cam being steel? or billet? any help would be appreciated...thanks in advance

Pull the dist, look at the cam. Smooth shaft behind the gear is steel, rough is cast.
good luck,
