This is strange, I don't see how they can deny you coverage without proof. I think I would try calling Ford Customer Service directly.

My old man did the same thing on his Passat 2.0T, down shifted into 2nd meant to find 4th. VW wouldn't replace the engine either, they ended up splitting the cost with him after he called VW multiple times.
