Hello everyone, back in the mustang game after picking up a 1994 mustang gt 5 speed a few months ago. former owner of a 95 that i had for about ten years, but sold that car way back in 2011.

been lurking on the site as i slowly fix up this one. Im definitely on a budget and want a high 12 second street car out of it, and a fun almost 30 year old cruiser to drive on occasion. i drive it on short errands mostly right now.

car is dinged and scratched to hell with a bad paint job but looks good from 10 feet away. have some decent bolt ons to start with. Car has full exhaust, 4.10s, 65mm TB, typhoon intake, upgraded 24lb injectors and MAF, egr delete, and possibly more than that as thats just what i can see with the naked eye.

Car has some issues of course, the most annoying being-

Have some significant slop in the steering wheel/shaft, looks like a shaft from an 03 cobra is the most cost effective fix there.

AC blows cold, then cuts off, seems like an AC pressure switch is my answer there.

I do have a few questions, so here they are.

1- as far i can tell i have iron heads on the car. car has a lopey idle but i have no idea if its a stock cam or not. why would a previous owner put 24# injectors on the car with the stock heads? anyone know how to tell if it has gt40p heads on it or a definitive way to tell they are stock E7s?

2- headliner is falling as is the board underneath. this is over both door windows and the rear window too. how much in 2023 dollars to have replaced/repaired?

3-with 4.10s and a 5 speed, my speedo acts crazy. is this just because the speedo gear in the tranny was never replaced? all other gauges work, other than the trip odometer. would replacing the speedo gear have any effect on the trip odometer?

4- after many years away from this forum, it seems like this is no longer very active. i know its a short 94-95 model run and the cars are 30 years old, but are there any other forums out there 94-95 specific with more active users? this and stangnet used to be my spots, have any new boards of quality popped up?

Thanks for any insight!

Lopey idle could be a vacuum leak. Smoke test the engine.

Plenty of people put 24's in a stock engine. Why? Some people like to waste money.

Gt40p heads have a very noticeable spark plug angle compared to e7 and gt40. They also have 4 vertical bars cast into the ends. Gt40 had 3 bars. Under the valve cover is stamped also.

Erratic speedo could be several things. Give us more details on what it's doing.

I'm unaware of other, quality, 94/95 boards.

great picture @SNK VNM thats exactly the info i was looking for. i had read in years past that the gt40s needed a different spark plug boot, but hadnt seen any pics to verfiy. the pics certainly will help when i take another peak under the hood. My guess is it is stock heads and cam.

As far as the lope, i do know there is a vacuum leak by the firewall that i found when i purchased and forgot about until just now. whatever vacuum line it is, is badly deteriorated from age. Think it ran from the passenger firewall to the intake manifold. Will have to verify. Not familiar with a smoke test, ill look into that.

Speedo is very erractic... basically non operational at low speed-reads 0, bounces all over at (estimated) 20-40mph, and when at 50 mph (est) itll read steady-ish at 110 (on the dash). i typically use a gps app on my phone to keep me in line.

Vacuum line running to passenger side firewall will connect to canister purge valve and then to charcoal canister. Repair or replace vacuum lines as needed. Also remove passenger inner fender liner and inspect charcoal canister and thermactors and vacuum lines and tubes going to and from them.

That speedo problem is not due to the gear being changed. The gear would only throw off the mph by a steady amount. Also the trip being none operational is not due to a gear change. I'm not familiar with diag for those but I'd hazard a guess at the cluster. I'd start by looking at the sensor the gear attaches to and the cluster. Perhaps a search here might have some helpful results.

Only GT40p need different spark plug boots. GT40 are just like e7 in that aspect.

Remove the headliner from the car, separate the materials a couple inches, use 3M spray adhesive to re attach. Clean any residue from the backing board and the roof, apply a polyurethane adhesive to the cardboard and press into place. Use wood scrapes to brace and hold/prop in place. Let sit for 24 hours till adhesive cures. Keep windows down for a few days while the adhesive 'off gases'. Has a nasty smell.

You need a 6 tooth 'black' drive gear and 20 tooth 'black' driven gear to correct the speedometer calibration. Or a speed calibrator.
