I'm working on my 1991 coupe project. I also have my donor car, a 1991 GT that I ordered brand new back in 1991. The GT sustained rust damage from the salt water air when I lived by the beach in north Florida for over 10 yrs. I pulled the GT off the road 5 yrs ago because water would come through the rust holes into the driver's side floorboard.

I recently pulled the coupe's tank and it was rusty inside. I then pulled the GT's tank and it was also very rusty inside. Probably due to the humid, Houston weather and the water absorbing ethanol gas. I'm 0 for 2 on fox tanks. Time to buy a new one. I know there are plenty of choices out there that start at less than $100 and go up from there. Plenty of choices well below $150.

I'm just wanting to know if they're all china made like everything else these days. If anyone has purchased one, please let me know your thoughts on the new tank as well as where it was made. I don't need the tank just yet but I should at least make a decision.

I bought the summit tank a few months ago. When we first tried to mock it up with the old straps it was a really tight fit which seems to be a common hit or miss problem with all these replacement tanks as far as i can tell. I massaged the flange with a ballpeen and it seems like it will go in, but we haven't mounted it for good yet. I didn't see the dorman that cheap when i was in the market otherwise i probably would have gone that route. My guess is all the stock replacement one are pretty much the same.

I put the LMR one in a car about 2 months ago. Fit was tight and i had to use longer strap bolts to smoosh it in there. I did purchase new foam for the top, a new level sender, pump bracket, filler and vent gaskets. The old tank had 10 year old gas in it and the pump well had broken loose so the old tank had to go.

The new Tank looked reasonably well constructed and the paint was ok. It was marked made in Korea and the gaskets and lock rings were under the inner bottom cardboard flap in the box.

It was not what i would call a "bolt on". A few seams had to be bent and folded a bit to fit, and even then it was tighter than i would like. But I did get it to 90% satisfaction so i called it a day and let it ride.

Mike, do you happen to remember where the Summit tank was made? Is it the powdercoated Summit tank that I linked in post #2?

In my research, I read time and time again about how difficult it was to get the two tank mounting straps in place. I also remember some people saying they had to do some massaging to the flange. Thank you for posting your Summit tank experience.

Does LMR sell the foam or did you just use something like weatherstripping foam? I'd be satisfied with a "made in Korea" gas tank and it seems like all of these replacement gas tanks are going to require a little bit of massaging. Thank you for posting your experience!

I put one in over the summer and used adhesive insulation from Lowe's for the top of the tank, cost about $15. Lot cheaper than anything else I could find. Got the tank from eBay, looked like really good quality made. I do suggest that you get the attachment hardware from LMR, not necessarily the straps but the longer studs and nuts, will save a big battle getting that part to fit in as I had to use my knees to get the tank tight enuff for the straps to reach. The factory stuff will reach but it's so tight that the LMR stuff will just make it a lot easier getting the threads started.. Just my $0.02 and good luck with your Mustangs!!

Werecow91, do you remember where your ebay tank was made?

Thank you for the details on the Lowes, adhesive insulation. I'm going to have to buy some as well as longer bolts for the tank straps.

I bought this one on Amazon a few months ago. Works great and has a much improved baffle design. You can read my review on Amazon.

I read your Amazon review. It sounds like you're very happy with the Amazon tank. I like the idea of the powdercoated tanks. The Summit Racing tank is also powdercoated.

I used the LMR foam, fit was good, but it was thicker than the 33 year old foam that came out. That might have accounted for the fitment issues, but I didnt want to put nothing back in or try and scrape and transfer the stuff I took out. I figured i would let it compress for a year or so and try and readjust it.

The LMR tank IS a parts store tank, with a markup. For that reason i'd suggest just buying a tank off Rockauto/Amazon instead or a better idea is to try your local parts store instead as dented tanks arriving in the mail is a big risk. At least if you buy local, you can inspect the tank. If that costs a few bucks more, trust me it will be worth it.

But I installed a Spectra tank thati bought locally. I had two minor issues. One was the baffle was spot welded to the tank bottom slightly askew which a clearance issue with the fuel pump. This was very minor and took all of 2 mins to realize and correct. Second issue was it was a tight install with the straps, which was solved by getting slightly longer gas strap bolts. This is a common complain with most of the aftermarket tanks I've seen people install, and I've seen threads about this pop up frequently. I used longer bolts and that solved the problem and made the install easy. This was 2 years ago, and I've had no issues with the tank once installed. All new Ford seals, new tank padding, new 190lph pump, new hoses and a fresh coat of paint. Cleaned up the wiring harness and reloomed it as well.

Only reason I replaced the tank was the baffle broke inside. When I took the original tank out, it was spotless inside. Anyway, even though I had to tweak it slightly, I was happy with quality of the spectra tank. I put a little bit more elbow grease into it than anyone will ever see unfortunately.

I used the LMR foam as I was pressed for time, but I later found equivalent stuff at home depot that would have been acceptable to use. Cannot recall what it was called to search. I'm sure amazon would have some too. It's just foam padding with adhesive side

The OEM 87-93 gas tank bolts are: (unsure if earlier are the same)
M10 x 1.5 x 35mm long. Class 9.8

The pass side has plenty of space to install a longer bolt, but on the drivers side you have a hard stop at 35-40mm with the bottom of the spare tire well. This side, it would be best to install a stud and thread a nut on to make install easier.

My tank is the SUM-255004 and does have the coating. It seems more like silver paint than powder coating to me. The box says made in Taiwan, and if you look at photos from the thread in this link it the baffle looks like the ACP one, there is only a hole in the side of the baffle not the tubing like the stock pictured one.

EFI fuel tank baffle description?

Here is the picture of the box my tank came in. Maybe those part number will help you cross check it more.
