I can score a free set of BFG 255/40/17 fronts and 275/40/17 rears, and I need new tires. Badly.

Problem - the free tires have never been mounted and have been in storage since new, but they're 7 years old. They don't seem dry and crumbly, but I don't want to kill myself either.

Anybody know how long an unused tire can live?

I think it matters more how they were stored. On the tread or on their sides?
Tire's last 7 years on the vehicle so why not if stored correctly?

These were stored on their sides. I took them home and cleaned them up last night. The rubber seems a bit harder than a new tire, like when you try to dig into it with your fingernail, but there aren't any cracks in them.

My understanding is wheels shouldn't be stored on their sides for long periods of time. I do not know what issue arise from doing this.
As long as they aren't cracked they are probably fine. I remember the set on the back of the wifes old car with over 100,000 miles had cracks in between the tread blocks and ran fine.
