I've been a anderson ford motorsport PMS user for almost 4 years now. I have loved it, and never had any problems with it, but I'm ready for a change. Maybe just looking to learn something new. from what i've been reading this AEM EMS is supposed to be all that. I'm considering any stand alone that people would recommend. I'm not trying to find something extrememly difficult to use either. I was wondering what people had to say about their experience with this as opposed to another tuning device. What are the Pro's and cons.. how long to hook up, how long to get the car running, driving, and how hard it it actually to just dial in a rough tune? I'm driving a 93 cobra, but i have an A9L computer in it, so i'd assume ijust want the regular version of the EMS? I'm no tuner, but i have tuned myself on my PMS all this time, so i figure i should be fine adapting to the EMS with some tech help from you guys. Thanks in advance for your response.

The only issue I have relates to a slight surge/pulse when cruising between 50 - 60 mph. I've data logged all the parameters that I felt may be causing it but haven't been able to isolate the source of the problem. There are no tuners around me for 100's of miles let alone one familar with the AEM. I'm half toying with the idea of taking a late spring drive (2000 mi) to have Bob Kurgan give the car a final tune. The car is a SN95 (94 GT AODE). Engine easily spins to 6500 rpm without issue but I have set the AODE shift points at 5600.
Log Decel fuel cut and see if it's going in and out of fuel cut when the issue is occuring. What is most likely happening is the load/rpm/tps values that setup decel fuel cut are most likely off and causing the bucking at light throttle cruise. I'm willing to bet the load/tps setting for decel is not right and it's cutting fuel too early.

Thanks for the tip. Car is still parked for the winter but I've copied your reply and will log the Decel fuel cut.

Checking my Options - Fuel Decel I have:
Fuel off above RPM 2500
Fuel off below load -10.20 PSIg
Fuel off below TPS 3.12 %
Fuel off coolant 32*F

Anything you see as being askew? Looking at a log that I ran just before parking it for the winter I would guess it's the load value. Am I correct in the assumption that a value of say -11 is below -10.2?
how long will it take me to set this thing up for my car to start it and be able to drive and start tuning on it?

That's sort of like asking "how high is high". I would suggest that you contact Bob Kurgan and have him provide a baseline tune based on your setup and tweek it from there as you become familar with the program.
Well initially i was planning on purchasing from bob, but I came acrossed a deal that i couldn't pass up and bought it. I asked him how much it would cost me to purchase a baseline calibration, but he explained to me that at this time he is only providing technical assistance to his customers who purchase through him. So I have already exhuasted him as a resource i assume. I do appologize for asking some pointless questions, i'm just eager to get this and start learning.

Bob spends a lot of time on the phone with people while he's trying to tune cars. It's understandable that he would tell you that. He will help you if you go to him for a tune or purchase the product from him. I have heard of people who call him a zillion times and he provides a ton of info and then they buy it somewhere else to save a few dollars, then want his help when the place they bought it from won't or can't help. Paying customers should come first.

I totally agree with this statement. :D

Greg, I'm not sure why you felt it was necessary to post this implying that I might not have the mental compacity to understand why a busy man such as bob kurgan wouldn't be able to help me if i didn't purchase through him. I simply posted above what he stated to me, and which i totally understand and agree with. Obviously paying customers take presidence over all others. However i've had countless number of people post up saying get a base calibration from bob kurgan... call bob kurgan.. take your car to bob kurgan. While all those are great ideas, I wanted to post and make clear that due to his current work load, he is only able to help customers going through him so there wasn't any confusion as to why i'm ignoring their advice. I in no way posted that as disrespectful towards bob.
Forget Kurgan.

What is your combo?

Maybe a couple of "tunes" I have or someone else has can get you started.

Relax. You took my response in the wrong context. I don't believe I used any sort of hostile language towards you. I'm quite capable of that kind of response, however in this instance that wasn't the case.

On another note, install is easy and you should be able to get the car started using the base setup wizard.
greg, i'm not being hostile either, i'm simply saying that when a person makes a statement like that, it draws posts like the one that follwed yours and can cause my thread to get blown way off topic if you know what i mean. that's all.
welp my AEM EMS arrived yesterday, however since i was at work the post office will be holding it until monday :( I am going to get a USB to serial adapter tomorrow as well so i can use my laptop. i believe the same cable i used to datalog with my pms will work... at least i don't see why it wouldn't. I got it from sears. Does anyone on here live in PA?
also. let me ask this. when someone says base calibration... such as bob kurgan offers, what all does that entail as far as calibrating the AEM? does that just mean they're setting up the system for what your using such as sensors, injectors etc.. or is this a detailed guestimate of what your car should need to get close to running half decent?

When i supply base calibrations and tech support, it means that I spend 1-2hrs on the phone with the customer as we go over all the sensors to make sure everything is reading correctly. The program i provide is a PROVEN tune that has worked on similar combinations. I scale the boost and RPM to taylor to the customers motor, not just some "guess"... The tune will be within 5% and the customer can usually go WOT after i get a few datalogs. Yes, i will request a few datalogs to make sure everything looks right before i suggest the customer goes WOT..

thanks bob
thanks bob, i wasn't exactly sure what that meant. I know there were plenty of base tunes for pms users when i used the pms, however those were hit or miss a lot of the times, and i always found it better to just start from scratch and setup my timing numbers i wanted and fuel, then adjust to dial it in.

In my case that's what I got. A couple of phone calls to make a few minor adjustments, explanations and then to a tuner (could be you) to work on the details. The only tuner I had access to was located 300 miles away over two mountain ranges and with no experience using the AEM. It got me there okay but I kept rpm's under 3K to be on the abundantly safe side.

LOL now you tell me. You still might get a call to sort out a few issues. At least I can find my way around AEMPro a little better now than last year.
no horror stories!! i need postive motivation lol... not fear..
