So I'm getting voltage at both the positive and negative terminals of the ignition coil with only the positive wire hooked up to the positive terminal. Looks like somehow I got a short inside the ignition coil. How this happened in parallel to installing the new dash harness I do not know.
If you are measuring with a DVOM, this would be normal and not indicate a problem.
That's exactly what I was doing, I didn't realize that was normal. What I didn't mention was that the positive side was at 12.xx volts and the negative side was at 6.xx volts with the forward. From what I have read this indicates a problem as they should both be at 12.xx volts with the key forward, Like I said in the other post I wasn't getting spark regardless and I replaced the coil and it started right up.

your diagnosis is not making sense

there would be no voltage drop if there is no current flowing

your problem is with something else

all you had to do was ground coil negative rapidly and you would have made spark

Can you explain? With only the positive terminal hooked up to the coil and the negative terminal side disconnected and key to run engine off. With a DVOM going from the battery negative to the negative terminal of the coil what voltage should I read? Same conditions but from the battery negative to positive terminal on the coil what voltage should I read?

there will be batt potential across the entire length of conductor, which includes the load a coil of wire

with no current, any where you touch will be batt volt

So what do you suspect causing the no start and no spark condition before I replaced the ignition coil if when I replaced the coil it started right up?
i dont guess

either what you said, or how you said it, is incorrect

your coil would not be at fault from you what you described
