I just bought a 99 triple black Cobra convertible and it has two problems.

Under hard acceleration (around 4k) i hear a knocking noise. I can't tell if is is a bad gas pinging noise or valve knocking noise. Has anyone else experienced this or have any suggestions? Fuel filter change? plugs? I have tried gas from several different gas stations with no remedy.

The second problem is that when I shift into 5th gear it grinds all the time. Synchros? new clutch?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm not sure about the knocking noise, since I haven't heard it for myself on your car.

As for 5th gear, if you are hitting all your other gears just fine and only 5th is a problem, it's probably that synchronizer going bad. You might try a fluid change. GM synchromesh or Mobil1 synthetic. These will affect the transmission differently, depending on the amount of synchronizer wear already present. I'd just go with the amber colored synchromesh (not full synthetic - it's a blend). But, to rehash, you can drastically change the shifting performance of the car by changing fluids to a different type.

Hope that helps.
