351w rpm limit?

First post here, just getting into 351w’s.
So, my bracket car (83 mustang gt) got laid up after blowing the 3rd engine in 4 years, having my first kid and buying a new house. It’s only been 22 years! I’ve raced everything from escorts to f150’s to 8.90 roadsters over the years. Just retired in July and the kids are gone, I’m getting the gt back out. Have a 460/c6 combo I was going to put in but decided to stick to sportsman for the first year or two.(13.5-20 et) I am NOT running another 8000rpm small block...ever! Want a 5500rpm big block ....but, in the meantime am looking at a 351w/p heads I have as well as a .512/[email protected] cam I have.
So, junkyard 351 with 750dp I have and 1 3/4 long tubes with aforementioned heads/ cam. Guessing 300 hp, that puts me at 110mph and with my 4.86’s, about 6400.
Wild guess, but would the stock bottom end hold that? I’m guessing no but would like a second opinion. It has a 9” out of a 76 bronco and I have a set of 3.50 gears too.
I’m thinking that cam won’t wind the 351 up(still making power) past 6000 so maybe go 3.50’s anyway. How’s that for a first post? Lol!

What rpm will a stock Windsor handle.(repeatedly)

I'm not one to criticize another man's build but, you'll have one hell of a time getting a few sheets of plywood home in that thing.... :p

I would have expected worse damage, but I guess that exo-cage did it's job.
The plan was to chop the box and weld it to the back of the cab like a bronco, once I get everything else done.
I never have it “fixed” long enough to move on to that.

Why does everyone avoid changing cam bearings? I've watched a friend change cam bearings a couple times.
If you have the right tools its not that hard, but there's a lot that can go wrong regarding bearing bore alignment. Sometimes the bores aren't straight (even from the factory) and the bearings will need trimming to get the bores to line up enough so the cam will turn freely. Most of the common cam bearing tools for a SBF don't work well, mainly due to the staggered cam journal sizes.
I’ve got a roller 5.0 sitting on the floor and it FITB me thinking, can I put the cam and roller lifters/spider in the 88 Windsor at came with a flat tapper cam? I’d drill and tap holes for the spider obviously, just wondering if I would need an undersized journal type cam or would the lifters pop out of the block etc

Need a small base circle cam because the non roller block has a shorter lifter bore. If you use a std base circle cam you run the risk of the oil hole on the lifter body becoming exposed at max lift, then the lifter has no oil pressure. Some of these non roller blocks have an even shorter lifter bore because ford loved to put a huge radius on top of the lifter bore, which makes the bore even shorter
Cool, thanks for the info!
Back to the drawing board...😂
PENNZOIL anyone???

Can’t really add anything more here, but I would have no concern using one at 7000+ rpm with 550-600hp. If it had just forged pistons, good rod bolts, good main studs with a girdle then 7500+ with no worries. I’ve seen many friends abuse them and they last.

Have fun.
@Goinbroke2
What ever ended up happening on this project? Really interested to see the results.
Well…. I got some 460 parts and was leaning that way… I also have a roller 5.0 block that would take the gt40P’s and there is a 302 in it. The 351 is still on the engine stand, covered with fender covers….still thinking…

Once the car is on the track this summer with the 302 in it and I work out any bugs from sitting 25 years, I think I will build the 351 but now it’s looking like it’s not going to be a “rering and bearing” like I was hoping. I’ve got some forged 302 pistons out of another engine and with the 351 rods…a 3.85 stroke crank would definitely get me the 3-350hp I need…
All that to say… still contemplating 😂😂😂

I do want to run a 460 at some point but perhaps not in the white mustang.(oh yeah, since this started I picked up a 86 mustang lx with a 3.8 for the wife)
351 forum but here is some videos of my blue 86 that was supposed to be “all plated and legal, drove it the other day”…🤬🤬🤬

and then more problems…

And then more…

3.8😂😂😂 NOT a powerhouse😂😂

Hate that I’ve dumped money into the 3.8 but with 88,000kms on it

I found myself in a very similar situation.
Doesn't seem like there's many (if any) 351w donor engines out there that are healthy candidates for a rering and send.

Currently waiting on mine to get back from the machine shop. I decided on oversized stock pistons, stock crank/rods and a good set of heads for now. I'll have to build the other block I've got when I've got the space/time/$ to do so.

edit: that went out the window lol.
looks like I’m building a 393
